Thematic workshop on Research & Innovation in the Atlantic Ports and on the overview of the Atlantic Action Plan focused on how research and innovation can contribute to the successful implementation of the Atlantic Action Plan with the objective to identify the research and innovation priorities necessary to enable the implementation of an Atlantic strategy.
More than eighty participants from the different countries and regions of the Atlantic Arc gathered in Bordeaux to discuss how they can implement smart specialisation in their regions and cooperate across borders. Inspiration was taken from the Baltic Sea, which is more advanced in terms of its macro-regional strategy.
The Polish Ministry of Economy and the World Bank Group in coordination with the European Commission organised a joint regional workshop entitled "Smart Investment for Smart Specialisation". The goal of the event was to support Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Poland in realizing smart specialisation strategies, and as such achieving more efficient investment of structural funds from the European Union.
On the eve of the conference, Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, and President of the RegioStars Jury, and Luc van den Brande, former President of the Committee of the Regions, announced the winners of the RegioStars 2012 Awards. Styria in Austria, Malmö in Sweden, Podlaskie in Poland and two European Territorial Cooperation projects, bringing together partners from 9 different Member States, are the clear winners taking centre stage in Europe.
S3 Seminar for the Danube Macro Region
The aim of this event that gathered about 100 participants from all over the Danube region was to inform about Smart Specialisation Strategies, and discuss macro-regional strengths, comparative advantages and potential future growth areas.
DG Regio, S3 Platform and the Latvian Government co-organised an S3 event for the Baltic Sea Region in Riga (Latvia). The main purpose of the event was to discuss the concept of Smart specialisation in the framework of the Baltic Sea region and the status and possibilities for smart specialisation strategies in the Baltic.
