The first meeting of the Working Group is organised as part of the Stairway to Excellence project, managed by JRC in close cooperation with DG REGIO, and seeks to maximise the impact of Smart Specialisation Strategies in EU regions and member states, and to realise the full potential of using EU funding programmes managed at regional, national and EU levels.
The main aim of this event is to gather key stakeholders from different European MSs and regions and facilitate interaction, exchange of good practices, identify barriers and obstacles appearing in each of the project phases, set up potential collaboration and work out common solutions.

In the context of the Bluemed initiative the Ministry of Education Science and Sport (MIZŠ) and the Marine Biology Station of the National Institute of Biology (NIB MBP) of Slovenia, together with the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC), organize an event aimed at creating synergies between different European, regional and national policies and instruments in the field of marine and coastal areas, as well as to present the JRC-EASAC report "Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and seas".
The aim of the workshop is to create a forum for exchange of best practices and enhancing collaboration between NCPs as well as regional/ national authorities managing European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) on the issue of synergies between H2020 and European Structural and Investment Funds in regard to the specialized thematic areas.
