The Spanish region expressed its interest to focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) when implementing Smart Specialisation Strategy.

In an initial meeting on 1 June 2021, the Commissioner for the Agenda 2030 of the Government of Aragon, Spain, Fermín Serrano Sanz, presented to JRC the region’s progress related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, indicating the interest to adjust Aragon’s Smart Specialisation Strategy to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over the recent years Aragon made a great effort to align all the regional policies with SDGs and collaborates with other Spanish regions on regional indicators to measure joint progress. Now the region wants to use the experience from JRC work on Smart Specialisation Strategies for SDGs to make sure science, technology and innovation are mobilised to achieve not only economic but also societal and environmental goals. Monika Matusiak, Team Leader for Smart Specialisation – Global Outreach, presented the new methodological developments and recent achievements in this area. The meeting served as a first approach for the Aragon Government and for the JRC to explore future joint efforts. The initiative provided the JRC with an overview about how Aragon is managing their S3 and SDGs policies and strategies and how they can be potentially improved under JRC’s guidance.
