Description

Background

In December 2019, EIT together with JRC published a report entitled “European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs): Collaboration in the RIS3 Context. The report investigates the motivations, practices and opportunities for strengthening collaborations between the EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs), focusing on excellence-based innovation, and the national and regional Managing Authorities (MAs) of European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) (focusing on place-based innovation in line with the cohesion policy), within the context of Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3).

EIT and JRC jointly organises this online workshop to introduce the findings of the report to representatives of the Managing Authorities and to launch a dialogue on collaboration among the stakeholders.

Aim of the Workshop

The EIT KICs are part of the Horizon Europe. In light of the upcoming funding period 2021-2027, we aim to engage into discussions on the challenges and priorities with regard to the complementarities between national and regional RIS3 and EIT KICs’ thematic areas in the EIT Regional Innovation Scheme (EIT RIS) countries.

At large, EIT KICs invest in entrepreneurship support, entrepreneurial education and in commercialisation of innovations in the areas of climate, energy, digital transformation, health, raw materials, food, urban mobility and manufacturing. During the workshop a dialogue will be launched between national/regional authorities in charge of ESIF and RIS3 and representatives of the EIT KICs, particularly from the EIT RIS countries, and seek potential collaboration on strategic projects and programmes that would enable market uptake of innovations nationally and regionally.

Methodology of the Workshop

The workshop will consist of two main sessions and one short bridge session:

  1. Policy discussion on the upcoming funding period: the findings of the joint EIT and JRC report, policy framework of the upcoming funding period 2021-2027, policy context of the synergies and the overall challenges and uncertainties posed by the policy framework.
  2. Bridge: Real-time online poll on experiences & challenges on enabling synergies between ESIF and Framework Programmes.
  3. Participatory exercise to identify challenges, opportunities and possible primary actions to enhance collaboration in the upcoming funding periodA participatory workshop that will build on the results of the real-time online poll and explore the avenues of potential joint cooperation in the thematic areas relevant for the EIT KICs and ESIF MAs and/or implementation bodies of RIS3.
