The event was a result of the joint effort of several United Nations agencies such as UNCTAD, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNU-MERIT, UNEP, ECLAC and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in the framework of the working group on Capacity Building of the Inter-Agency Task Team on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It took place on the 19, 20 and 21 of April 2021 and it aimed at policy makers, professionals, and administrators of public sector working in different areas of STI policies in Latin America. The event gathered more than one hundred professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

The programme consisted of three sessions of two hours each day and it focused on three central elements: formulation of STI policies for the SDGs; policy approaches, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Monika Matusiak, team leader from the JRC, presented “Policy mix en Estrategias de Especialización Inteligente (S3) de la Unión Europea” during a block entirely dedicated to STI policy tools. Each session was structured around a base presentation providing main concepts and theory, followed by specific cases and the introduction of practical experiences creating a dynamic that promoted group discussions and the exchange of experiences among peers.

A similar workshop targeting specifically professionals of regional STI institutions from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru was delivered on 10, 11 and 12 of May 2021 and was attended by more than one hundred participants.
