S3 Summit: Smart Specialisation Strategy

The Azores Regional Directorate for Science and Technology (DRCT, GRA), the Portuguese National Innovation Agency (ANI), and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission are organising the S3 SUMMIT: Smart Specialisation Strategy – São Miguel Azores 2023 initiative, which will will take place from May 17 to 19, 2023 in São Miguel – Azores.
This initiative focuses on Smart Specialisation Strategies and comprises 3 events:

Innovation and Smart Specialization Forum Multilevel Governance: Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Practice
What?
The Innovation and Smart Specialization Forum consists of various sessions, including peer learning sessions, roundtables, and networking events, that aim to establish the importance of collaboration and alignment between different actors and governance levels in achieving effective Smart Specialization and innovation multi-level governance. The Forum provides a platform for stakeholders to exchange knowledge and experiences, promote best practices, and foster collaboration and alignment towards achieving shared objectives in national and regional innovation.
For whom?
The Forum is intended for key stakeholders from the European, national, and regional levels, including policy makers, businesses, academics, and civil society, who are interested in discussing and addressing the main challenges facing smart specialization and promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in informal discussions, build relationships, and explore opportunities for future partnerships.
What participants should expect?
- Participate in an in-depth analysis of the challenges and trends of smart specialization governance.
- Engage in an exchange of experiences with relevant stakeholders from different regions.
- Learn from success cases related to smart specialization and engage in discus sions with other stakeholders on how to adapt and apply these solutions in their own regions.

WORKSHOP Partnerships for Regional Innovation learning journey: Co-creating (inter)regional missions
What?
Partnerships for Regional Innovation strongly advocates the mission oriented innovation policy approach and local missions. Putting creation of partnerships at the core, the process of mission development requires collaboration between different types of stakeholders and perhaps even different regions. Therefore, the workshop will provide an opportunity to better understand the mission approach, starting from local and potentially reaching up to interregional level. It will offer practical hands-on work focused on the societal challenges of the Azores and will set the ground for all participants to start their mission initiatives. Workshops is designed to be interactive for all participants to be able to engage and learn.
Goals
- Understanding the key concepts/practical steps
- Working on a practical case
- Building interface for interregional collaboration on missions
Participants
The workshop is primarily intended for PRI Pilot participants, but is open to anyone wishing to learn and apply the knowledge later in building better regional policies following a mission approach. Expected number of participants: 20-30 from various EU regions.
