WEBINAR on a holistic approach to circular manufacturing (CM): Exploring collaboration between European PPP initiatives and Portuguese stakeholders

  • 23 Jun 2020 to 23 Jun 2020

Description

This webinar was by invitation only.

As part of the pilot 2 of the Working Group H2020 for RIS3, Centro and Norte region in Portugal, together with the Joint Research Centre, are testing a new approach for optimizing public-private and international cooperation in implementing their RIS3 priority on circular manufacturing (CM).

After an initial stakeholder event in november 2019 in Porto, Portugal, this small-scale match-making webinar aimed at bringing together a selected number of European actors in circular manufacturing, both from European R&I initiatives and from H2020 projects in circular manufacturing, with Portuguese regions and their stakeholders. The aim of the webinar was explore initial collaboration potential, both at programming and at project level, between actors in CM. More concretely, it focused on holistic circular approaches that go beyond waste management and valorisation and consider circularity from the design phase.

The webinar mixed actors responsible for programming and development of support measures related to CM, with project partners/coordinators responsible of specific H2020 projects focusing on holistic circular approaches. Collaboration is targeted between programme actors and project actors.

The webinar consisted of two main blocks:
•    In a first block, European public-private R&I initiatives present collaboration options, initially focused on EIT KICs and contractual PPPs.
•    A second block includes a selection of H2020 projects focusing on integral approaches to CM, with a wide applicability. Lessons are drawn from these projects, and requirements for next steps are formulated.

Based on both types of actors, initial collaboration options were discussed between webinar participants which included regional and national Portuguese managing authorities, European R&I initiatives, H2020 project coordinators/partners, selected companies, clusters and research organisations in CM, as well as European Commission representatives.

Agenda and Presentations

15h30-15h45     Introductory session

•    Welcome by Isabel Damasceno - CCDRC and Ester Silva - CCDRN (5´)
•    Brief presentation of the circular economy policy context in Europe, the role of this pilot, and the objectives of this webinar, Karel Haegeman - JRC (5´)
•    Relevance of holistic projects for various industry sectors, why a systemic/integrated approach is in line with the Green Deal.
Jose Caldeira - INESC TEC (5´)

15H45-17h15     Collaboration options with European R&I PPPs in circular manufacturing

This session started with 4 pitches of 5-7´ each of selected European R&I initiatives and related collaboration options for Portugal. The pitches are followed by a structured discussion among participants aiming to identify key topics and actors for future collaboration, at programming and project level.

Pitches (30’):
1.    EIT Manufacturing, George Chryssolouris
2.    EIT Raw Materials, Massimo Gasparon
3.    cPPP Factories of the Future, Zeljko Pazin
4.    cPPP SPIRE, Àngels Orduña

Structured discussion (1h) on collaboration options and actors involved at programming and project level. Guiding questions:
•    How can this integrated approach be incorporated in other industry sectors?
•    Added value of the public-private dimension
•    Opportunities for collaboration (“international EDP”)
•    Concrete insights on how to apply to the regions (Identify value chains that could be replicated in the regions collectively or not)
•    Implications at strategy and programming level (e.g. collaboration between managing authorities and PPPs)

17h15-18h40     Collaboration options with (other) H2020 projects in circular manufacturing

This session started with 4 pitches of 5-7´ each of selected H2020 projects in circular manufacturing and related collaboration options for Portugal. The pitches are followed by a structured discussion among participants aiming to identify key topics and actors for future collaboration, at programming and project level.

Pitches (30’):
1.    Sustainable techno-economic solutions for the agricultural value chain (AgroCycle), Tom Curran
2.    Future business models for the Efficient recovery of Natural and Industrial secondary resources in eXtended supply chains contexts (FENIX), Bernd Kopacek
3.    Cloudification of Production Engineering for Predictive Digital Manufacturing (CloudiFacturing), Andreas Ocklenburg
4.    Implement a European-wide coordination of research and innovation programmes on raw materials to strengthen the industry competitiveness and the shift to a circular economy (ERA-MIN 2), Dina Carrilho

Structured discussion (1h) on collaboration options and actors involved at programming and project level. Guiding questions:
•    Expected collaboration after/beyond the project
•    How can these examples be applied in a broader context and transferred to other industry sectors
•    Added value of the public-private dimension
•    Opportunities for collaboration (“international EDP/Roadmaping”)
•    Implications at strategy and programming level (e.g. collaboration of project partners of regional actors with PPP members)

18h40-19h      Closing session

•    New Green Deal call to be launched, Anabela Carvalho - ANI
•    Wrap up by the regions of Centro and Norte – CCDR-C and  CCDR-N
•    Closing remarks on critical success factors - Karel Haegeman - JRC, Jose Caldeira - INESC TEC
