TValley is a collaboration between knowledge institutions, governments and companies in the field of mechatronics and robotics. TValley was known under the name Mechantronica Valley Twente founded in 2001. TValley is in 2016 being revived with a broader and more ambitious goal; an integrated research and development roadmap on mechatronics, systems engineering and robotics. TVally is a nationally recognized Smart Industry Field Lab for digitalization of the industry and is a non-profit organisation.
The instigator Dirk Bekke is professor Mechatronics at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. In addition to mechatronic education and profiling of the high-tech industry in the east of the Netherlands, knowledge exchange takes place about concrete projects concerning robotics and smart industry.

The SME start-up company drone4agro (www.drone4agro.com) developed a drone to spray crops, but the need was to do this autonomously. The project Mavric was started in which the necessary technologies for this are developed: precision landing, autonomous charging, autonomous refilling, docking station technology, mission control. The technologies are developed on a TValley platform and together with the SME integrated in their prototype.
Navigation for Autonomous Systems
The company RIWO Engineering (www.riwo.eu) is an industrial system automation integrator and has several technologies integrated in guided vehicles for farming and industrie. New technology like Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) is developed by TValley and within the project Mario incorporated in their automation system by which their systems become more competetive, use less installation time and have a higher degree of flexbility and autonomy and are able to cope with unstructured environments.
In an alike project called SLAMming the technology is demonstrated to be able to map large environments for the construction industries and in the project MedicalRobotics and R5COP the technology is used to stear cleaning robots.
The companies Bronkhorst High Tech and Benchmark Electornics assembly high tech flow meters respectively hand held devices. Their products are different, but assembly process is alike consisting of sensors, PCBs, connectors and housing. In the project RoboTAO the coopertion between robot and human is taken to the next level in order to embed cobots in this fine assembly process. Using an aile approach different end effectors, methodologies are used in the process steps to obtain knowledge how the robotization can be done for zero-defect single production.
Inspection & Maintenance
To ensure and imprve the environment national legislation demands exhaust measurements for the industries. Currently these measurements are done by humans climbing up the industrial exhaust pipes. With the project FAST a drone called the Flexible Air Sample Taker is developed together with industrial partners. The drone has two modules: one is capable of measuring and logging the air quality using various sensors for environmental questions but also during fires and other hazardous or inspection needs. The other module is capable of taking air samples and bringin this to the ground for detailed analysis. The proof-of-concepts reulted in a new product portfolio for www.dronexpert.nl being used by industry, government, consultancy firms and fire brigade.
Within the Project Medical Robotics several health care technologies are developed for regional SME like Demcon, Focal Meditech, Roessingh Research & Development ranging from a cleaning robot in the care to exoskelet for arm assistive excersises for revalidation purposes. Also an active wheel chair is developed, demonstrated and used in clinical tests in ordrr to prevent decubitis for elderly people. These proof-of-concepts developed by Saxion are validated, demonstrated and resulted in new prototypes.
