Description

Cybersecurity innovation hub creates a multidisciplinary ecosystem of research institutions, governmental bodies, clusters and private companies focused on cooperation, information sharing, research and implementation of cutting-edge technologies in cybersecurity. The creation of this ecosystem is based on long-term strategic cooperation between Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, the National Cyber and Information Security Agency and the Brno Regional Chamber of Commerce, which led to the creation of a wide network of cooperating key players in cybersecurity at national and international level.

The key features of the hub are its multidisciplinarity, a wide range of cooperating national and international, public and private institutions, as well as the possibility of utilising unique infrastructures. Partners involved in the operation of the hub retain experts dealing with cybersecurity issues not only from a technical perspective, but also from a procedural, organizational, legal, economic or sociological point of view. The hub also cooperates with and provides support to variety of national public authorities (like National Cyber and Information Security Authority, Ministry of Justice, Czech Police, or Data Protection Authority), international institutions (ENISA, Europol or United Nations), private clusters, trade organisations, scientific parks and private corporations. As some of the partners of the hub are research organisations and innovative companies, the hub can utilise their research, development and production infrastructures (ie. cyber ranges, training facilities, security operations centres, proving grounds or testing infrastructures).

Activities and services of the hub provided to the SMEs include primarily:

  • networking, know-how, and capacities sharing;  
  • information and cybersecurity education: training, learning, conferences, workshops;  
  • sharing information on current trends in computer network security;  
  • proposals for adjusting information security legislation;  
  • communication with computer network security organizations and associations;
  • creating information security education programs;
  • provision of access to unique auxiliary infrastructures;
  • consultation on available innovative cybersecurity technologies and their implementation; 
  • etc.

The hub is a non-profit organisation coordinated by the National centre of competence on cybersecurity, which is governed by its Board which consists of representatives of key private and public stakeholders in cybersecurity in the Czech Republic.

 

Cybersecurity innovation hub tvoří multidisciplinární ekosystém výzkumných organizací, orgánů veřejné moci, klastrů a soukromých společností zaměřený na spolupráci, sdílení informací, výzkum a implementaci přelomových technologií v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti. Vytvoření tohoto ekosystému je postaveno na dlouhodobé strategické spolupráci mezi Masarykovou univerzitkou, Vysokým učením technický v Brně, Národního úřadu pro kybernetickou a informační bezpečnost a Regionální Hospodářské komory v Brně, která vedla k vybudování široké sitě spolupracujících subjektů v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti na národní a mezinárodní úrovni.

Kličovými vlastnostmi hubu je jeno multidisciplinarita, široké spektrum spolupracujících národních i nadnárodních, veřejných i soukromých institucí, stejně jako možnost využití unikátních infrastruktur. Partneři zapojení do CIH disponují experty věnující se oblasti kyberbezpečnosti nejen z technického pohledu, ale rovněž z pohledu procesního, organizačního, právního, ekonomického či sociálně vědního. Hub rovněž spolupracuje s a poskytuje podporu pro nejrůznější veřejnoprávní instituce (například Národní úřad pro kybernetickou a informační bezpečnost, Ministerstvo Spravedlnosti, Policii ČR, nebo Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů), mezinárodní instituce (ENISA, Europol, nebo OSN), soukromé klastry, obchodní sdružení, vědeckotechnické parky, či soukromé společnosti. Jelikož jsou partnery CIH rovněž výzkumné organizace a inovativní společnosti, hub rovněž využívá jejich výzkumné, vývojové a testovací infrastruktura (například. cyber range, infrastruktury pro cvičení a školení, dohledová centra, ověřovací a testovací infrastruktury).

Aktivity a služby, které hub poskytuje malým a středním podnikům zahrnují zejména:

  • síťování, sdílení know-how a kapacit

  • informace a vzdělávání v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti: cvičení, školení, konference, workshopy

  • sdílení informací o aktuálních trendech v bezpečnosti počítačových sítí

  • příprava podkladů k aktualizaci relevantní legislativy a norem

  • komunikace s organizacemi a asociacemi síťové a kybernetické bezpečnosti

  • vytváření vzdělávacích programů v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti

  • poskytování přístupu k unikátním podpůrným infrastrukturám

  • konzultace ohledně dostupných inovativních kyberbezepčnostních technologií a jejich implementace, apod.

Hub je neziskovou organizací koordibnovanou Národním centrem kompetence pro kyberbezpečnost, které řídí jeho Rada složená ze zástupců klíčových soukromých a veřejných stakeholderů v oblasti kyberbezpečnosti v ČR.

The hub is member of national CEEINNO patform which focuses on support to the innovative companies, development of knowledge economy in the Czech Republic and implementation of innovations in companies.

Activities of the hub are aligned with National RIS3 strategy, which consideres, among others, IT services, software, IT security, sustainable and secure production and distribution of energy, production of vehicles, sustainability and security of transportation and efficient and innovative industry and automation, as some of the main goals.

The hub has also signed various memoranda of cooperation with various stakeholders, ie. National Cyber and Information Security Agency, National Agency for Communication and Information Technolgies. 

Members of the hub are also partners or coordinators of various national or EU funded projects focused on applied research, cooperation among industry and appliaction of innovative technologies (mainly focused on cybersecurity, cybercrime, data protection, capability building, awareness raising, etc.).

Cybersecurity exercise

Client organisation

The client is a medium-sized company managing critical infrastructure, which is a liable entity under both the Cyber ​​Security Act and the NIS Directive. The company is required by law to manage personal security and make sure it has trained staff responsible for detection and mitigation of cybersecurity incidents.

Client needs

This company needed to ensure personnel security and sufficient staff training in the event of a cyber security incident. Since the infrastructure of the client is rarely under severe attack, the staff doesn’t have enough experinece with large scale cybersecurity attacks. Also, the innovative infrastructure and technologies, that the company uses have specifics, that need to be taken into account when deciding how to best prepare and train the staff.

Provided solution

DIH members have tailored a tailor-made cyber security exercise for this client, where they can test and evaluate their response capabilities, the quality of internal processes, and their ability to collaborate with relevant public entities. For the purposes of this exercise, the unique KYPO polygon infrastructure was used to create a suitably configured exercise virtual infrastructure, which contained also unique technologies the client uses. After the exercise, a report was prepared for the client evaluating the quality of their processes, the ability to respond and suggesting appropriate measures to achieve more efficient infrastructure protection.

Client organisation

The client is a small company that provides innovative land management services based on their unique mapping information systems for construction companies operating in the transport, energy and agriculture sectors.

Client needs

The client was implementing new innovative functions into their services and upgrading completely new services to be compliant with the requirements of the EU Data Protection Regulation. As part of this process, the client needed to consult the use of appropriate security technologies and organizational measures to secure the processed personal data.

Provided solution

Member of the hub has prepared for this customer a complete analysis of his services, used information systems and data flows and processed personal data, and proposed the most suitable measures and technologies for their implementation taking into account both the legal requirements and the possibilities and specifics of the customer. The client was therefore able to both quickly implement new and innovative services and be compliant with the legal requirements.

Access to unique infrastructures

Client organisation

The client is a medium-sized company active in the field of energy, which is currently engaged in the implementation of smart grid technologies in electricity distribution systems, which would allow application of innovative methods of network stability and security management in the distribution system.

Client needs

Client for the purpose of building a smart grid, needed to test appropriate communication technologies and protocols in terms of capacity, availability and security. However, this could not be done on existing production infrastructures, because it could negatively affect their operation.

Provided solution

Therefore, the members of the hub provided the client with access to a unique virtual cybernetic infrastructure KYPO and developed new testbeds for this purpose, that the client could use to test the functionality and security of available technologies for communication in a smart grid distribution systems. As a result, the client could better specify the requirements for suppliers and at the same time significantly accelerated the process of implementing new technologies into distribution systems.
