Ventspils High Technology Park, Foundation is identified among two existing Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) in Latvia. DIH in Ventspils helps regional companies to become more competitive by improving their business processes as well as services and products by means of digital technology. Co-creation Infrastructure

We provide co-creation infrastructure to support maker culture, maker movement, grassroots digital fabrication and community-based innovations. We provide equipment, instruction, and support and build community for the purposes of enabling community members to design, prototype and create solutions that wouldn’t be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone.  We organise and provide:

  • Instruction to significantly increase community coverage and number of users involved in innovations, technology design and fabrication.
  • Tools and physical environment where individuals and start-ups can experiment and learn with others through hands-on involvement and self-directed projects.
  • Access to municipality support and consultations, as well as access to networks, funding and open­-source designs, tutorials, and workshops globally.

 

Collaborative Research

Collaborative Research services include:

  • Implementation of collaborative research projects in close co-operation with experts from Ventspils University of Applied Sciences and companies within region.
  • Collaboration with other DIHs in Europe is an essential part of innovation projects.
  • Help to companies through supporting design and fabrication of new products (e.g. concept validation, prototyping, technology testing and validation, pre-competitive series production).

Business development services include:

  • Visioning and Strategy Development for digitisation. Working with the clients to envision their digital future and develop a strategy for delivering this vision.

National initiatives for digitising industry

  • Guidelines for the Development of Science, Technology and Innovation for 2014-2020  in Latvia (STI Guidelines). The aim of the STI Guidelines is to raise the global competitiveness of Latvian science, technology and innovation, satisfying the development needs of Latvian society and economy. STI Guidelines describe the Smart Specialisation Strategy of Latvia.
  • Information Society Development Guidelines for 2014 -2020 in Latvia (IS Guidelines).The aim of the IS guidelines is to enable everyone to use the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies (ICT), to build a knowledge-based economy and to improve growth and job creation.

Regional initiatives for digitising industry

  • Kurzeme Planning Region (KPR) territory spatial planning 2006-2026 and KPR development strategy.
  • Ventspils ICT Sector Strategy & Action Plan 2014-2020. The strategy was developed by involvement of more than 20 stakeholders, both local municipality, education, business support organisations and local and international ICT companies, e.g. IBM, DPA, Microsoft. The overarching goal of the strategy is that Ventspils becomes European level hub for smart technologies (creation and manufacturing).

Ongoing and implemented projects

  • Ventspils is one of the 15 European cities selected from 92 applications participating in the Digital Cities Challenge which is a tailored programme of coaching and facilitation launched by the European Commission to help the cities develop and implement digital policies that can transform day to day life for residents, businesses, workers, and entrepreneurs. DIH in Ventspils is the local coordinator of digital transition policy development and involvement of stakeholders.

COSME, implementation period – 2018-2019.

  • DIH Robotics. The project aims to provide a sustainable ecosystem of robotics stakeholders covering the entire value network to facilitate and accelerate a broad uptake and integration of robotic technologies, and supporting the digitisation of industry through robotics. DIH in Ventspils will perform digitisation audits of manufacturing companies in Latvia and facilitate implementation of robotics solutions in the companies.

Horizon 2020, implementation period – 2019-2022.

  • Baltic Game Industry - Empowering a Booster for Regional Development. The project aims towards boosting the game industry in the Baltic Sea region, increasing the capacity for innovation and transferring the game industry in the region into a global player with worldwide competitiveness. DIH in Ventspils is developing and piloting business incubation/acceleration programme for gaming industry startups.

INTERREG Baltic Sea Region transnational cooperation programme, implementation period – 2017-2020.

  • Brave Idea Support Programme. The project aims to facilitate entry in export markets of new Latvian and Estonian SMEs. DIH in Ventspils is the lead partner of the project.

INTERREG Estonia-Latvia transnational cooperation programme, implementation period – 2017-2019.

  • Development of new energy efficient building of technology demonstration centre. The demonstration centre showcases the best practices and technologies through success stories (interactive exhibits and product samples).

EEA Financial Mechanism, implementation period - 2015-2016.

  • Regional Business Incubator developed and operated by VHTP to facilitate creation and development of new, viable and competitive businesses in Northern Kurzeme region.

Ventspils University of Applied Sciences (VUAS) is a self-governing state university and a scientific-research institution founded in 1997.

Client needs

To promote the participation and collaboration of students, researchers and industry experts in a common space tech orientated project with the aim to build the first nanosatellite of Latvia and to develop specific skills and competencies.

To attract the funding for the prototyping activities.

DIH in Ventspils ensured project partner scouting services and Venta-1, which is the first nanosatellite project of Latvia, was implemented due to the collaboration of Ventspils High Technology Park, LatSpace Ltd., ÅAC Microtec of Uppsala (Sweden), the City University of Applied Sciences in Bremen (Germany), and, surely, VUAS. The necessary funding for the prototype of Venta-1 nanosatellite, which was launched on June 23, 2017, was attracted by DIH in Ventspils.

  • Formed the project team.
  • Ensured implementation of the collaborative research project in close co-operation with experts from educational/research institutions and companies within the region and also from abroad.

Client profile

IMMER Digital - one of the world's largest producers of flexible packaging materials, films and labels - is a member of IMMER Group.

Client needs

The company planned to introduce new products (brand protection, interactive packaging, etc.) on the market bringing up a need to source and develop a new innovative manufacturing line/equipment (non-existent on the market).

Provided solution

State-of-art and most innovative manufacturing technologies and equipment available on the market were assessed developing a new technical and software solution to (1) print and laminate on even thinner material, (2) cost-efficiently apply premium quality inks, (3) allow combining different printing technologies, (4) ensure brand protection and interactive design printing technologies. All these innovations led to a higher level of automation and decreased the consumption of raw materials and energy resources making it possible for IMMER Digital to deliver a premium product for affordable price in the market.

More than 4 MEUR of EU funding was accessed for further development of IMMER Digital manufacturing plant in Ventspils High Technology Park industrial territory.

DIH in Ventspils:

  • Provided business assessment (business plan development) of the new automated manufacturing technologies.
  • Attracted the necessary funding (4 MEUR) and investments to make use of the new technologies and introduce the innovations.
