Service Examples

Delta management is becoming smarter all the time. Digitisation, automation and linking water system functions make delta management more efficient and, in some cases, cheaper. The data gathered by sensors and other advanced measuring equipment form the basis of day to day management and strategic decisions. Thanks to this information, the maintenance of infrastructure facilities ranging from sewage works to waterways, can be matched to the actual need for renovation or other work. A reliable information provision system is also a vital part of disaster management. That is why there is an international demand for ICT applications which enables decisive and informed decisions.
Dozens of entrepreneurs are working on time and cost effective solutions under the auspices of VPdelta. New digital means enable citizens and businesses to participate in the management of their living environment. New and productive cross fertilisation takes place, for instance by linking water management with sustainable energy production or smart ‘more crop per drop’ irrigation methods.

Blijdorp Zoo is a very special environment for research, entrepreneurship and education. Its waterways and ponds, which are part of the city’s water system, enhance its attractive, parklike surroundings and form an important link in the local ecosystem. They also a play a role in how visitors rate the zoo.Based on a water system analysis carried out by trainees from the water sector, partners in VPdelta are implementing measures to improve the water system and inviting innovative entrepreneurs to contribute to a more sustainable way of managing the zoo’s water supply. The application of their innovations are clearly demonstrated and explained. The zoo is provided with clean, clear water and, as an added advantage, its annual 1.5 million visitors have a chance to enjoy a new educational attraction.

Delft Flood Proof Holland opened its doors in 2013. Here, entrepreneurs are testing and demonstrating a range of innovations, including temporary flood defences: modular systems and flexible constructions which can be transported, mounted and put to use quickly and simply. Open air basins are used for letting in water and discharging it at will to simulate flooding. The lab is an excellent learning environment where entrepreneurs are working in close collaboration with students and researchers.
Flood Proof Holland has quickly established itself as an important showcase for concrete solutions to the challenges faced by the delta technology sector. Over 2,500 visitors from Asia, Africa, North and South America, including the ambassadors to twenty countries, have already attended lab demonstrations. The success of Flood Proof Holland has been picked up by the national and international media and has resulted in orders for a number of the participating companies.
