The objective of 5TONIC is to create a global open environment where members from industry and academia, as well as R&D institutions, work together in specific research and innovation projects related to 5G technologies with a view to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development and entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites in an international environment.
5G is expected to produce transformational, and potentially disruptive, changes to industries and entire economies, having a positive impact on their growth. As 5G becomes embedded in all kinds of devices, machines and services for fifferent industrial segment, it will play a similar role to electricity or transport infrastructures. 5TONIC is the place to develop and test new 5G based products and services in collaboration with other leading industries, suppliers and customers (with special focus on SMEs and start-ups), providing the network infrastructure for these purposes (we define this process as co-creation, as it involves all the stakeholders in the development of products and services). It also supports interoperability testing, so it is feasible to verify in 5TONIC the real interoperation between SME developed SW and the products of main industry (critical in a NFV/SDN environment), as well as among main industry. Finally, 5TONIC is also engaged in the techno-economic evaluation of the different use cases and applications identified, in order to ensure that 5G provides added value.
Local language for 5TONIC is English

Development of the 5G technological solutions to be applied in the fields of tourism and trade fairs)?
The project focuses on the identification, incubation and launching of cases with high added value enabled by 5G in tourism related vertical markets. Due to its status as one of the main trade fair operators and its leading role in the tourism sector through the International Tourism Fair known as FITUR, the project will facilitate research into different lines of innovation in the development of new services for tourism and trade fairs supported by Cloud, Big Data, AI and 5G technologies to transform the experience of those who use IFEMA, before, during and after their participation in the trade fair, without any limitations in terms of space.

Support of high reliability, low latency mobile services for the centralization of the control of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
ASTI and 5TONIC will cooperate in trials intended to evaluate the use of advanced mobile communications in the support of manufacturing processes, one of the main drivers for the deployment of 5G systems. In order to support the communications requirements associated with the operation of AGVs, 5G must support various technical requirements in terms of their reliability, latency, and throughput, which are not feasible with current technological solutions, like LTE. On the other hand, the use of 5G may allow centralizing some guidance decisions that are now handled by each AGV, providing more intelligence and permitting the support of new coordination mechanisms that can optimize manufacturing processes. Initial trials are expected to take place at 5TONIC premises in Leganés (Madrid) before the end of the year.

This international event, which took place from 23 January to 3 February 2017 in Leganes, Madrid (Spain), was hosted by 5TONIC Laboratory, with the technical support of Telefonica and IMDEA Networks Institute. 35 commercial and open source implementations were tested for interoperability, including 15 virtual network functions, 9 management and orchestration solutions and 11 NFV platforms. More than 160 engineers were involved in the preparation of the Plugtests, 80 of them on-site, coming from a diverse community of NFV implementers, including vendors and key Open Source projects such as ETSI OSM, Open Baton, OPEN-O and OPNFV. Overall, 160 different combinations of VNF, MANO and VIM&NFVI were tested for interoperability and over 1500 individual test results were reported.
