More than 50 regions across the EU have identified maritime sectors/investments as a priority in their Smart Specialisation Strategies and are investing into blue growth-related prospective areas. The workshop reflected the JRC/DG MARE Annual Report of the EU Blue Economy 2020 and focused on the innovation as an opportunity for thematic interregional cooperation through joint regional and corporate efforts in the emerging blue growth sectors and discuss the role of quadruple helix stakeholders in the regional and macro-regional innovation collaboration. Through the active involvement of regional representatives, the session featured a few key Emerging Blue Economy sectors particularity relevant in terms of contribution to Green Deal objectives: renewable energy sources, marine environmental protection with a focus on micro-plastics, and desalination.

This event follows on from the previous workshop on Smart Specialisation held in 2015 in Lyon and takes a closer look at maritime and port applications, with a number of sessions centred around the issue of hydrogen and fuel cell applications for boats/ships, logistics and stationary applications, as well as some other aspects including safety and regulations and funding mechanisms.
The Digital Assembly 2017 will take place in Valletta, Malta. It is an event co-organised by the European Commission and the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In the context of the Bluemed initiative the Ministry of Education Science and Sport (MIZŠ) and the Marine Biology Station of the National Institute of Biology (NIB MBP) of Slovenia, together with the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC), organize an event aimed at creating synergies between different European, regional and national policies and instruments in the field of marine and coastal areas, as well as to present the JRC-EASAC report "Marine sustainability in an age of changing oceans and seas".

This DG REGIO High-Level Event will highlight the key role of regions in developing new growth dynamics for Europe, based on bottom-up entrepreneurship and innovation. It will mark the mobilisation of this potential for transformation in priority areas, e.g. energy transition, digital growth, circular economy, agro-food or industrial modernisation. Smart specialisation strategies can leverage numerous new growth opportunities for all regions when aligning their business driven smart specialisation investments in new European value chains.
This workshop was part of the 2015 Open Days programme and included participants from policy making, research and industry. Four S3P members will present their plans for specialising in Blue Growth: The Canary Islands (ES), Nordland (NO), Portugal and Ireland!
DG CONNECT and the Smart Specialisation Platform are jointly developing measures to support Member States and regions in developing Digital Growth Strategies. As part of this work and in cooperation with Lodzkie Region and Lodz Univeristy of Technology an outreach event on ICT strategies and tools for regional growth was arranged in Lodz (PL).
