Given its experimentalist and result-oriented approach, Smart Specialisation places a strong emphasis on the role of monitoring and evaluation.
This event concludes a set of three meetings in which the partner regions of the project RIS3 Support in Lagging Regions have discussed and advanced their monitoring system.
The second meeting of the working-group on RIS3 monitoring in lagging regions brought forward the discussion started in February. It looked into some technical aspects of monitoring (such as for instance, data collection methods and target setting), as well as providing avenues for sharing good practices among regions.

The S3 Platform together with the Regional Government of Emilia-Romagna jointly organised the first Peer eXchange & Learning (PXL) workshop on RIS3 monitoring. The workshop took place in the facilities of the Regione Emilia-Romagna.
The S3 Platform organised a high-level meeting on challenges and monitoring implementation of S3 strategies, which presented the state of play regarding the implementation phase of RIS3.

The event was co-organised by the European Commission, the University of Groningen and the region Northern Netherlands (NL). The workshop focused on the use of economic indicators and monitoring and evaluation tools in the context of research and innovation strategies for smart specialisation (RIS3). The purpose of the initiative was to discuss the role of different types of indicators in the process of developing and implementing RIS3 in general and with the support of the Structural Funds.
