Speakers form the Baltic Sea, the Basque Country, Lombardy and Portugal presented examples of projects in this field being financed by the SF and how smart specialisation can help to develop further synergies with Horizon 2020. The event was organised jointly by EFFRA (European Factories of the Future), DG RTD and DG REGIO.

During this workshop, five European regions - Aragón, Balearic Islands, Lapland, Marche and Pomorskie - presented the current status of their work on RIS3. The rest of the workshop participants acted as 'critical friends' and discussed the strategies of the five regions under review.

More than eighty participants from the different countries and regions of the Atlantic Arc gathered in Bordeaux to discuss how they can implement smart specialisation in their regions and cooperate across borders. Inspiration was taken from the Baltic Sea, which is more advanced in terms of its macro-regional strategy.

The workshop was organised by Małopolskie Voivodeship within the SMART+ INTERREG IVC project.
The Italian country event on RIS3 was hosted by the Apulia Region in Bari and gathered representatives from all Italian regions, the Ministry for Economic Development and the Ministry for Research, University and Education. Two EU regions were invited to illustrate their experience on smart specialisation strategies: Upper Austria and Castilla y León.
