Description

The Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas (CERTH) is the only research center in Northern Greece and one of the largest in the country. It is listed among the TOP-20 E.U. research institutions with the highest participation in competitive research grants. CERTH’s successful history is characterized by strong and long term collaborations with more than 1.200 acknowledged partners from the private and the public sector in Greece and abroad. Partners include multinational industries, large companies and SMEs, local authorities, academic institutions, research centers, etc.

Today CERTH is organized under the following five institutes:

  • Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI), Sustainable & Clean Energy, Environmental Technologies, Chemical & Biochemical Processes, Advanced Functional Materials
  • Information Technologies Institute (ITI), Informatics, Telematics and Telecommunication Technologies
  • Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), Land, Sea and Air Transportation as well as Sustainable Mobility services
  • Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), Agri-biotechnology, Health Translational Research, Informatics for big bio-data
  • Institute of Bio-Economy and Agri-Technology (iBO), Agrotechnology, Mechatronics, Biomedicine and Kinesiology

CERTH operates as Digital Innovation Hub. Combining its unique research facilities and high qualified technical and scientific personnel, CERTH transforms scientific knowledge into innovative technological applications. Among others, CERTH develops advanced material technologies; automation and control systems for industrial processes; technologies for clean production processes; biotech applications; big data analytics tools; intelligent transportation and mobility services; technologies dedicated to the bio-production systems domain. In addition, CERTH disposes state of the art research infrastructure and testbeds such as nZEB smart house for exploring smart IoT-based technologies in the fields of energy, health, security, big data, robotics and AI; unique pilot plans for exploring new chemical processes and energy carriers potential enhancement; VR units and simulators for rapid prototyping of intelligent and secure transportation services; analytical equipment and computation power for big data analysis across all domains in Life Sciences. Collaboration with CERTH accelerates thus the adaptation of the business sector and especially SMEs, to the new digital industrial era and the markets of the future.

CERTH’s interest in providing end-to-end technological solutions and services is further proven by the founding of numerus spin-offs (15 up to date) that deliver innovative production technologies materializing the 4th Industrial revolution.

Telecare & Tele-monitoring services

Need addressed:

Unobtrusive daily activity behavior and tele-monitoring services at home, being integrated through eHealth pass solution.

Service provided:

CERTH/ITI performed real time analysis of information collected from IoT sensors at home (motion detectors, door sensors, medical devices etc.) regarding behavioral monitoring. Technologies for automatically sensing of abnormal behavior of elder persons and trigger alarms and blockchain technology for the permission management of the provided solution were used.

Digitalizing the Livestock sector

Need addressed:

Improved welfare conditions for the animal and reduced environmental footprint

Services provided:

CERTH’s Institute of Bio-Economy and Agri-Technology (iBO) provided an innovative solution based on computational methods, automation techniques and advanced sensor technologies that were integrated for the design optimisation and smart management of intensive livestock buildings. The proposed action leads to sustainable eco-livestock buildings with improved welfare conditions for the animal and reduced environmental footprint

Energy management for construction sector

Need addressed:

An improved and more reliable tool for construction industry key stakeholders (such as Architects, designers and engineers), that will assist them in delivering better and more sustainable construction projects, taking into account during performance evaluation not only the static information of the buildings (e.g. walls, material, equipment) but to incorporate also models that cope with the analysis of their dynamic behavior due to occupancy.

Service provided:

A software prototype was designed and developed from CERTH/ITI for assessing the energy performance of construction products (mainly focusing on enterprise or commercial buildings) taking into account advanced occupancy models that will be parameterizable and will support building occupancy analysis and simulation.

Industrial control

Need addressed:

An industrial vision-based measurement system for measuring industrial parts with high accuracy assisting quality control, and process automatization.

Service provided:

The vision based measurement system developed by CERTH/ITI, includes methods for acquiring, processing, analyzing and understanding digital images/videos. Compared to other alternative technologies the system has small cost, is robust to illumination conditions and object surface properties and it is easy to use by non-expert personnel.

Underwater Seafloor Mapping

Need addressed:

Seafloor mapping using swarms of underwater robots. Minimize the preparation and operational time/costs.

Service provided:

CERTH/ITI developed a muti-robot navigation system for seafloor mapping, which has successfully implemented the above-mentioned tool in the Port of Porto (Lexois), Portugal.

Quality Biodiversity

Need addressed:

The Greek Black Pig is a local breed included in the great list of Greek endangered animal species. Although it visually resembles the wild boar, the Greek black pigs is a domesticated pig race. It is the oldest known breed of pigs in Greece and descriptions of this animal can be found in Homer’s Odyssey and other ancient texts. The service refers to the conservation of both the animal biodiversity and the area where they live, in order to sustain farms in areas where processed meat products are part of the traditional cuisine and culture.

Service provided:

To ensure product quality and authenticity, the Institute of Applied Biosciences – CERTH not only documented the genetic relatedness of Greek black pigs with other races, work recently published in the scientific press, but went a step beyond by creating a DNA-based identity of Greek black pigs that can be used to certify the authenticity of meat products and, thus, offering producers and consumers an innovative and unique tool that can guarantee the origin of the meat products.
