5GBarcelona will design, develop, deploy and demonstrate, in operational conditions, a distributed cloud and radio platform for municipalities and infrastructure owners acting as 5G neutral.

5G Barcelona is aligned with the regional strategy. The main RIS3CAT’s challenge is transforming knowledge and technology into economic and social value which is aligned with Smart Specialization Strategy (S3).

The activities of 5G Barcelona Hub are well aligned with the RIS3CAT strategic objectives which are:

1. To enhance the competitiveness of the business fabric by improving the efficiency of production processes, promoting internationalisation and reorienting established sectors towards activities with greater added value.

2. To promote new emerging economic activities through research and innovation to create and develop new market niches

3. To consolidate Catalonia as a European knowledge hub and link technological and creative capacities to existing and emerging sectors in the territory

4. To improve the overall Catalan innovation system, increasing the competitiveness of

3: Cross-cutting enabling technologies; Pillar 4: Environment for innovation.

companies and steering public policies towards the promotion of innovation, internationalisation and entrepreneurship.

5G initially will be implemented in 4 strategic sectors of Pillar 1 which are entertainment, mobility, health and industry 4.0.

5G and IoT technologies supported by the hub are generating new economic opportunities in emerging sectors (Pillar2). At the same time inter-regional cooperation is a key element of RIS3CAT and the hub. 5G Barcelona hub is an active player in Horizon 2020 projects, its members participate in 8 projects of 5G PPP (H2020) with a finance of 3,9M€ funding granted,  and the hub is collaborating with European partners such as 5GBerlin and 5GUK.

Telecom operators and vertical solution providers such as media content do not have access to 5G infrastructure to test and deploy solutions in real environments

5GBarcelona will provide a virtualisation platform in order to enable telecom companies and operators to create dynamic end-to-end slices containing both virtualised edge and network resources.
