FC Barcelona (non-profit organización) was founded in 1899 and it is democratically managed by its members (more than153.000 members). It is one of the most widely supported teams in the world and the club has one of the largest social media followers in the world among sports teams (more than 300 million followers). The active departments of FCB are: Football (men and woman), Football B (men and woman), Football U-19 (men), Beach soccer, Basketball, Basketball B, Wheelchair basketball, Handball, Roller hockey, Ice hockey, Rugby union, Rugby league, Futsal and Volleyball indoor (men and women). Espai Barça is the sports complex of FCB. The Espai has integrated harmoniously with the Les Corts neighbourhood, with a stadium that will fit around 105,000 spectators. It has a flexible and modern Palau Blaugrana with a capacity of 12,500 fans. It is intended to be an example of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Currently the Espai Barça has numerous sports facilities, such as the Camp Nou Stadium (owned by the club), Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper en San Juan Despí, La Masía, Mini Estadi, Palau Blaugrana, Palau Blaugrana 2, Palau de Gel and the Espacio Memorial Fútbol Club Barcelona.

The Fundación Fútbol Club Barcelona is the social, humanitarian, cultural and sports organization. It was created in 1994 with the aim of promoting and providing support to all those humanitarian entities. It also focuses on vulnerable children and adult communities. Initially the activities carried out by the foundation were materialized through donations from members, supporters and business entities of the country, being composed by members of honour, collaborators and protective members. In 2006 the Fundación Fútbol Club Barcelona took a new impulse, receiving that year, 0.7% of the ordinary profits of the club (2.2 million euros in 2008). It also adhered to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Plan, and for the first time the FCB included UNICEF advertising on their football kit. As part of its social management, the Fundaciò has collaborated with other governmental and social entities to promote children's education, sport, culture and health. Its main allies include UNICEF, UNESCO, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), among others.

BIHUB: The worldwide centre for sports knowledge and innovation is located physically at the same place as FCB , having access to all the installations, resources and services from the sport complex ESPAI BARÇA (medical centres, training facilities, control & management facilities, commercial facilities, etc.), which also includes the multidisciplinary team of experts from FCB, which includes, but are not limited to: doctors, industrial engineers, architects, athletes and coaches, among many others.

BIHUB is a platform open to society, a disruptive area where the sport industry can collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in the sport sector. All the facilities, spaces and innovations of the FCB are harmoniously integrated in a digitally way in the FCB’s HUB.

BIHUB is based on the fact that all the knowledge that the Club has generated over the years, on various subjects associated to sport, and not just football, can be shared, aiming to be the worldwide number one sports industry centre for knowledge and innovation, with the idea of creating value both for the Club and society in general.

BIHUB enables the Club to innovate, generate, attract, manage and share both its own and external knowledge, through the development of new products, services and experiences of value, and not just for the FCB, but also to other sports clubs, markets, and sectors. This platform also seeks to offer a laboratory for new ideas and projects, providing the perfect environment for prototyping and testing by FCB partners.

BIHUB forms an ecosystem to foster knowledge and innovation. This ecosystem is based on a model that promotes a culture of excellence, transparency, and openness and collaboration with prestigious brands, universities, research centres, start-ups, entrepreneurs, students, athletes, investors, and visionaries. Some examples of collaborations are:

• Gatorade (American manufacturer of sports-themed beverage and food products): Gatorade, together with the FCB, prepares the commercial launch of its personalized hydration kit for athletes, which includes smart bottle, app, connected weight, wearables and soluble formulas adapted to each users’ needs (more information here).

• Toshiba (Japanese company dedicated to the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment): FC Barcelona appoints Toshiba Medical Systems as his Official Medical Systems Partner (more information here).

The five knowledge areas of BIHUB are:

1. Team sports: Conceptualisation and study of the complexities of different sports disciplines, analysing the collective dynamics of team sports to improve an understanding of play. • Automation of tactical analysis.

2. Performance: Study and application of new techniques, methods, and technologies to improve training based on its model of play. • Personalized training: Monitoring load to improve performance, injury prevention & rehabilitation. • Monitoring functional training at gym. • New training methods to improve performance: hypoxic training. • Better fatigue control.

3. Medical services and nutrition: Application of medical research to the fields of injury prevention and recovery, nutrition, and hydration. • Better monitoring to prevent muscle and tendon injuries. • Improve injuries diagnose and prognosis with new medical image techniques. • Design the perfect snack for elite athletes. • Personalized rehabilitation. • Personalized hydration. • Use genetics profiles to personalize training.

4. The main sponsor of the FCB is RAKUTEN, an expert company in the digital sector, which provides synergies for BIHUB. Through BIHUB, the FCB has created a public-private investment maximizing ecosystem that allows investing in companies related to the sports/medicine/nutrition/technology/etc. sectors, developing products and services of internal applicability to the Club and comparably to the rest of the sector and the related ones.

El FC Barcelona fue fundado en 1899 y es gestionado democráticamente por sus socios (más de 153.000 socios). BIHUB: El centro del conocimiento y la innovación deportiva a nivel mundial se ubica físicamente en el mismo lugar que FCB, teniendo acceso a todas las instalaciones, recursos y servicios del complejo deportivo ESPAI BARÇA (centros médicos, instalaciones de formación, instalaciones de control y gestión, instalaciones comerciales, etc.), que también incluye el equipo multidisciplinario de expertos de FCB, que incluye, entre otros: médicos, ingenieros industriales, arquitectos, atletas y entrenadores, entre muchos otros.

BIHUB es una plataforma abierta a la sociedad, un espacio disruptivo en la industria del deporte para colaborar con todos los agentes relevantes del sector del deporte. Todas las facilidades, espacios e innovaciones del FCB se integran armoniosamente de forma digital en el BIHUB del FCB.

Las áreas de conocimiento de BIHUB son:

1. Deportes de equipo: Concepción y estudio de las diferentes disciplinas deportivas desde la complejidad, interpretando la dinámica colectiva de los deportes de equipo para mejorar la comprensión del juego. • Automatización del análisis táctico.

2. Rendimiento: Estudio y aplicación de nuevas técnicas, métodos y tecnologías para la mejora del entrenamiento basado en su modelo de juego. • Entrenamiento personalizado: Supervisión de la carga para mejorar el desempeño, prevención de lesiones y rehabilitación. • Supervisión del entrenamiento funcional en el gimnasio. • Nuevos métodos de entrenamiento para mejorar el rendimiento: entrenamiento hipóxico. • Mejorar el control de la fatiga

3. Servicios médicos y nutrición: Aplicación de la investigación médica al campo de la prevención y la recuperación de lesiones, la nutrición y la hidratación. • Mejorar la monitorización para prevenir lesiones musculares y del tendón. • Mejorar el diagnóstico y pronóstico de lesiones con nuevas técnicas de imagen médica. • Diseñar el aperitivo perfecto para los atletas de élite. • Rehabilitación personalizada. • Hidratación personalizada. • Utilizar perfiles genéticos para personalizar la formación.

4. Tecnología: Implementación de la transformación digital y su impacto en las diferentes áreas del Club, poniendo el foco en temas de big data y performance tracking. • Seguimiento de la pelota: interior y exterior. • Mejora del seguimiento de los datos de posición. • Integración de datos tácticos, de rendimiento y personales (COR 2.0). • Entrenamiento cerebral: mejora del rendimiento de habilidades cognitivas. • Datos emocionales.

Ciencias sociales: Estudio de todos aquellos aspectos relacionados con la actividad diaria de la gestión deportiva que no están puramente vinculados a la práctica del deporte de alto rendimiento. • Infraestructura inteligente: Nuevos servicios Wi-Fi en el estadio. Nuevas formas de generación de energía. Recopilar datos significativos del usuario en las instalaciones (IoT). Nuevas formas de soluciones de seguridad. Generar, analizar y visualizar datos operacionales en un sistema integrado 3D. Estilo de Vida. Diseñar nuevos espacios de innovación dentro de las instalaciones deportivas. • Participación de los aficionados: Mejorar las experiencias de los usuarios con soluciones VR (virtual Reality). Recopilación y gestión de datos para personalizar la experiencia de los fans. Desarrollar un nuevo juego de eSports que se ajuste a los valores FCB. Diseñar nuevas aplicaciones de redes sociales. • Impacto social: Desarrollo de iniciativas deportivas que tengan un impacto en la población infantil y juvenil.

Link to national or regional initiatives for digitising industry

BIHUB is totally aligned with main digitization strategies, particularly with the “RESEARCH AND INNOVATION SMART SPECIALISATION STRATEGY OF CATALONIA” (RIS3CAT) launched by the Regional Catalan Government and built around the goals and framework policy announced in the Europe 2020 Strategy, which in turn is connected to the Spanish national initiative INDUSTRIA CONECTADA 4.0, launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. As a matter of fact, the BIHUB forms part of the RIS3CAT community of Health, named NEXTHEALTH, through the funded project ADVANCECAT, which was launched to create an accelerator to develop advanced therapies in Catalonia by setting up a network of Catalan centres involved in this type of work. The project aims to innovate and quickly advance from idea to clinical application and/or industrial production of these therapies. Nevertheless, besides the health industry sector, the BIHUB is also aligned with other sectors and communities such as, industrial systems, energy and resources, sustainable mobility and cultural and experience-based industries.

As regarding to cross-cutting or Key Enabling Technologies (KET), the BIHUB focuses on ICT, nanotechnology, biotechnology, advance manufacturing and advance materials as the main tools for transforming production and generating new scientific, technological and economic opportunities. Proof of this can be found on the project ADVANCECAT, internal activities carried out at BIHUB centre, which are described below, or for instance, a recent submitted project to H2020 programme (ICT-02-2018), title Evolving Textile Based Printing and Integration Technologies for Smart Compression Products, on which ICT nanotechnology and advance manufacturing technologies are combined to develop the proposed technology.

Overall, the BIHUB, which addresses the strategic objectives of RIS3CAT, and in turn Industria Conectada 4.0, tries to consolidate Catalonia as a European Knowledge HUB, connecting the country’s technological and creative capabilities with existing and emerging sectors in the territory. BIHUB is focused on cross-cutting enabling technologies, developing tools generating new scientific, technological and economic opportunities and link technological and creative capacities to existing and emerging sectors in the territory. BIHUB is a platform open to society, a disruptive digital area where the sport industry can collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in the sector. With this premise the FCB actively collaborate with start-ups, consolidated companies, technological centres, universities and all the organizations that can contribute to develop, stir and energize the industries involved sport sector such as health, ICT, construction, energy and resources, sustainable mobility and cultural and experience-based industries, among others. The products and services arising from these activities might be applicable to other sectors rather than the sports, upon the technology proposed.

. BIHUB proposes a scenario where technology and digitization (all types VR, AR, IoT,Big Data, etc.) will be applied to all areas related to sports. BIHUB aims to help change the world through sport excellence via knowledge and innovation. The HUB forms a digital ecosystem which is based on a model that promotes a culture of excellence and collaboration through new technologies and the digitization of the information.

BIHUB forms part of the 2015-21 Strategic Plan and falls under the area of sporting excellence, the first of five strategic lines. The other four are: social involvement; sports infrastructure and the Espai Barça; the Barça brand and its global position; and economic management and sustainability. Through BIHUB, FCB supports the digitization, attracting the talent needed to create new knowledge, products, and services that can be of benefit to athletes, members, fans, and society in general. Through BIHUB, FCB has associated with different digital companies, which working together are not only making progress in IoT, Artificial Intelligence, interaction technologies, data mining, big data, Internet services and e-learning, but also generating nodes of excellence related, for example with in AR /VR technologies (FCB Museum is an example of information and image digitalization). Examples of this associations are: -  Extrapolate positioning and ball data, through a machine learning video tracking and players’ identification from any broadcast feed. - Thought FCB infrastructures (construction-level data) and the use of technology, 3D architectural models are been created in order to improve security in public events. - FCB is collaborating with this company, providing positioning data, to monitor, treat and select contents. FCB, through its BIHUB and the ecosystem investment funds, aims to create a seal of quality that allows the companies with which it collaborates, certify that the products and services developed have been implemented and tested within the excellence of the club. Besides, through BIHUB, FCB Universitas, the programme which generates and transfers the knowledge created by FC Barcelona, the first programme for the generation and transmission of knowledge and innovation has been launched through e-learning courses, which are organised in collaboration with the Universidad Siglo 21. This programme offers five certificates in the sports science area: high performance sport psychology, sports nutrition, technology and science applied to sport, neuroscience, and training in team sports. BIHUB also offers two certificates in sports management and marketing. BIHUB follows a knowledge digitization cycle with four different phases: incorporation, generation, dissemination and innovation. In each of these phases, FCB promotes an open and collaborative ecosystem with start-ups, brands, universities and research centres from around the world. The digital platform aims to position the Club as a leading figure in knowledge and innovation, through the development of tools for sharing the Club’s knowledge, such as online streaming of workshops held by the Club, the launch of innovation challenges on a global scale, online courses, etc.

Service Examples

Innovative solutions related to BIM

 FCB is collaborating with the Norwegian company to develop new and innovative solutions related to BIM (Building Information Modelling). BIM is a powerfull way of digitising the construction industry. The interest of the FCB and the company is that by using open international standards when sharing data in construction projects and throughout the lifecycle of a building, a true ownership of the data and more innovation through open access to data will be secured. FCB has several digital models of various buildings that FC Barcelona will build and refurbish, and through the BIM model to develop, the Club will be able to utilize this digital information in order to improve the processes, efficiency and risk involved in the development of the building

Both organisations are collaborating for mutual benefit, with activities as described below:
- Using building SMART Data Dictionary to classify components in the digital model.
- The development of colour filters on the model that allow users to colour the building components based on certain criteria set by them.
- The creation of the “digital space” for a flexible data sharing.
- The implementation of simulations that allow users to take out objects from the BIM to temporary place in other locations.
- Connect all kinds of external data sources to the components in the digital model.
- Develop a new app to control initial client requirements with the generated digital models data filtering.

Video tracking and performance analytics

A French start-up company founded in 2015 which focuses on the development of software to convert a video of a football game in big data. The company specializes in the analysis, visual representation and modelling of football

The company is developing video tracking and performance analytics from any video capable to track everything on the pitch including the players and the ball. The software aims to extrapolate positioning and ball data, through a machine learning video tracking and players’ identification from any broadcast feed.

As in the prior case BIHUB is collaborating with this company providing their knowledge, experience and resources to develop and validate the proposed new technology. In this sense, FCB provides their knowledge and experience on the relevant parameters and data regarding tactics and performance of the players. Moreover, the FCB providers access to their installations, training sessions and matches as laboratory to test the new technology system in real-life conditions, so that to increase the technology readiness level.

There are no public evidences of this collaboration as the information is kept reserved to guarantee the viability of the project, based on the generation of a competitive advantage arising from the collaboration with FC Barcelona

Electronic Performance Tracking System

A Spanish technological Enterprise focused on sport science, new communications and physical activity monitoring.

The system develops wearable devices systems to monitor every moment of the training sessions to maximize efficiency and productivity during training and coaching lessons in real time. BIHUB is collaborating with this company providing their technical knowledge, experience and resources to develop and validate the proposed new technology. In this sense, FCB provides their knowledge and experience on the relevant parameters and data to monitor the efficiency on athletes, as well as a deeper understanding on the variables that influences the performances of the athletes during the training and coaching sessions. Moreover, the FCB providers their installations and athletes as laboratory to test the new technology system in real-life conditions, so that to increase the technology readiness level.
