Description
Description
PLASTIPOLIS has been officially appointed in 2005, as France’s competitiveness cluster for the plastics and composites industry sector. Plastipolis has now more than 400 active members (industrial firms, R&D centers, universities, training centers, institutions) including a large number of small and medium size companies. The main missions of Plastipolis are:
- The stimulation of innovation within the plastics and composites industry with connecting technologies and business applications,
- The support of small and medium companies to develop and implement new developments,
- The improvement of the cooperations between industry and academic entities.
Plastipolis has built its innovation strategy across different strategic technology domains that have been defined in connection with trends and challenges of the major business markets: construction, transportation, medical, packaging, energy and environment, sport and consumer goods. Based on continuous technology and market analysis, Plastipolis and its members are sharing a technology roadmap aiming to drive the innovation efforts toward the most relevant and promising challenges. This roadmap that is now under implementation is organized on 4 main strategic areas: Advanced materials, High added value manufacturing processes, Smart plastics and Green materials and eco-design.
From 2013, Plastipolis has been awarded the Gold label, the highest European award in cluster performance evaluation.

Link to national or regional initiatives for digitising industry
Plastipolis activities and prioritities are closely linked with regional smart specialization strategy -RIS3 (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: Industrial processes and eco-efficient factory, Smart mobility systems / Bourgogne-Franche Comté: advanced materials and processes for secured applications) as well with national industrial policy priorities (e.g circular economy, industry 4.0).
Plastipolis is in particular involved in different regional working groups connected to RIS3 priorities: Industrial processes and eco-efficient factory - Industrie du futur in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Smart systems and smart plastics in Bourgogne-Franche Comté.
Examples of previous or ongoing European projects:
H2020: CIRC-Pack, Citruspack, BeinCPPS
COSME or CIP: Materialix, Wiintech, Health2care
Interreg: Greenomed (MED), Care4tech, Alplastics, Alpclusters2020 (Alpine Space), Eden (Alcotra)

Start-up on smart plastics development (S2P - http://www.s-2p.com/temp/en/ )
- Client profiles:
- OEMs in different businesses: defense and security, automotive, aerospace, medical, home automation
- Plastics and composites tier 1 suppliers
- Client needs
- Development of new families of products with embedded electronics functions and high integration performance
- Provided solutions:
- S2P (Smart Plastic Products) is a French company based in Oyonnax, the so called “Plastics Valley”, in France. After 10 years of R&D at IPC, the French Technical Center for plastics and composites, we have created the S2P Company in 2014 to provide to industrial actors a set of services dedicated to 3D-MID (Molded Interconnect Devices – that we called Plastronics components in French), from designing to industrialization, including plastics, chemistry and electronics skills.
- Indeed, S2P helps you to facilitate the integration of electronics in your 3D complex products. From designing to industrialization, with a reliable industrial process, we integrate 3D conductive tracks and electronic components direct onto the plastic or composite parts, with complex 3D shapes. Combined with conventional PCB/Flex technologies, it helps you integrating electronics in constrained volumes: 3D antennas, 3D sensors, 3D LED lighting functions, 3D interconnections to suppress wires, Passive or active electronic components, Shielding areas, integrated connectors …
Development of connected tooling (Pernoud company)
- This development has been conducted within the BeInCPPS project (http://www.beincpps.eu/ )
- Client profile:
- Plastics and composites manufacturing companies
- Equipments suppliers (molds, machineries)
- Client needs:
- Reduce the Energy consumption
- Optimize the Overall Effectiveness Equipment (reduce scrap rate, reduce maintenance phases )
- Increase flexibility for mold design
- Reduce guarantee cost
- Provided solutions:
- The BEinCPPS experiment for Pernoud Company (https://www.pernoud.com/fr/step-1-the-full-electric-mold/ ) is based on tree pillars. The first pillar is following the evolution of injection machines which evolve from hydraulic to electric. That means that hydraulic movements in mold have to evolve to electric too. The second one is to acquire data from inside the mold. The mold today is almost a black box and we want to know what happened inside. So different sensors (temperature, pressure, stress ) are used and the data produced are analyzed for detecting deviations and launching alerts when it is needed. All data are stored on a cloud and the values of all sensors are visible everywhere in the world. This data also allows understanding issue on the mold (design issue or bad handling). The last pillar is the long term analysis of all data acquired. This long term analysis allows us to detect in advance any issue and avoid it.
