Description

The L3S research center performs foundational and applied research in the field of digital transformation as well as Data and Web Science. Research, technology and method development at L3S target the creation of intelligent, reliable and responsible systems that contribute to sustainable innovation and to shaping the digital transformation. L3S is also focused on transferring its knowledge and technology to industry and society. The L3S research center explores the implications of digital transformation to derive lessons learned, policy recommendations, and innovation strategies for the economy, politics, and society. Together with its partners, L3S facilitates the digital transformation through research, development and consulting, especially in the areas of mobility, health, production and education.

The L3S Digital Innovation Hub (L3S-DIH) combines the RTD competences of the L3S Research Center with those of the DIH partners in knowledge transfer, incubation and innovation support.

Das L3S ist ein Forschungszentrum für grundlagen- und anwendungsorientierte Forschung im Bereich Digitale Transformation ebenso wie Data und Web Science. L3S-Forscher entwickeln zukunftsweisende Methoden und Informationstechnologien für intelligente, zuverlässige und verantwortungsvolle Systeme, welche zur Gestaltung der digitalen Transformation und zur nachhaltigen Innovation beitragen. Der Wissentransfer in Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft bildet eine zentralen Baustein der Aktivitäten des L3S.

 

Das L3S erforscht die Auswirkungen des digitalen Wandels, um aus den Erkenntnissen Handlungsoptionen, -empfehlungen sowie Innovationsstrategien für die Wirtschaft, die Politik und Gesellschaft herzuleiten. Durch Forschung, Entwicklung und Beratung trägt das L3S gemeinsam mit seinen Partnern zur digitalen Transformation insbesondere in den Bereichen Mobilität, Gesundheit, Produktion und Bildung bei.

 

Der L3S Digital Innovation Hub (L3S-DIH) kombiniert die FTE-Kompetenzen des Forschungszentrums L3S mit denen der DIH-Partner in den Bereichen Wissenstransfer, Inkubation und Innovationsunterstützung.

Digital Readiness Check: Hannover Region's economic development agency helps companies find answers to the challenges of digitization. L3S provides consultants with whom low-threshold consulting services are implemented in order to determine the digital degree of maturity of companies and, based on this, to develop and implement concrete digitization projects.

 

The L3S Research Center is part of the competence center "Zentrum für digitale Innovationen Niedersachsen (ZDIN)" (Center for Digital Innovation Lower Saxony) which targets topics of digital transformation in six application-specific future labs (production, health, mobility, energy, agriculture, society & work).

AMA - Applied Machine Learning Academy

The aim of the AMA project is s to build up the Applied Machine Learning Academy (AMA) based on a sustainable, flexible and applied qualification concept. AMA will offer a rich portfolio of ML learning units - covering courses as well as labs for hands-on experiences - and an expertise sharing network. The focus is on foundational ML competences on ML competences for the application domain intelligent production (Industry 4.0). An active dialog with Industry and SMEs ensures a demand-driven training portfolio.

Via the project AMA, the L3S Research Center is linked to the national initiative "mit uns digital!" in Hannover (www.mitunsdigital.de), which supports SMEs in their path to digitization with consulting and training.

 

L3S director Wolfgang Nejdl is member of acatech, the National Academy of Science and Engineering, which supports policy-makers and society by providing qualified technical evaluations and forward-looking recommendations.

 
European Initiatives:

The International Data Spaces Association engages major business and research actors in designing a trustworthy architecture for the data economy. L3S is an active member of the International Data Spaces Association and contributes to the semantic data representation and interlinking activities. The IDSA aims to guarantee data sovereignty by an open, vendor-independent architecture for a peer-to-peer network which provides usage control of data from all domains.

Boost 4.0 is a lighthouse project in the H2020 Big Data PPP and the biggest European initiative in Big Data for Industry 4.0. With a 20M€ budget and leveraging 100M€ of private investment, Boost 4.0 will lead the construction of the European Industrial Data Space to improve the competitiveness of Industry 4.0 and will guide the European manufacturing industry in the introduction of Big Data in the factory, providing the industrial sector with the necessary tools to obtain the maximum benefit of Big Data. L3S - as part of Leibniz University of Hanover -  is a member of the consortium.

RTD Project: Automatic Pipeline Inspection

_A.       CLIENT PROFILE_

Medium-sized company offering reliable inspection services for pipelines in the petroleum, petrochemical and chemical industries

_B.       CLIENT NEEDS_

The inspection of piping systems is carried out using inline inspection tools, which can be guided through the pipeline during operation. This results in a wealth of sensor data, the manual evaluation of which is currently associated with a high level of personnel and time expenditure. In order to reduce these costs, to improve the accuracy of the evaluation as far as possible and thus to increase competitiveness enormously, parts of the processing chain are to be automated by using modern methods of machine learning.

RTD Project: Markerless Motion Capture

Medium-sized company which develops image-based systems for the acquisition and analysis of motion.

Motion detection without sensors on the body

_C.       PROVIDED SOLUTION TO MEET THE NEEDS_

A system to capture motion sequences accurately and solely on the basis of camera shots. The evaluation goes completely without sensors on the body and can thus be used in real sports events - such as football matches - in order to analyze sequences of movement.

Testing: Automatic localization of production resources

_A.       CLIENT PROFILE_

A medium-sized manufacturer and supplier of communication, monitoring and security technology

_B.       CLIENT NEEDS_

In SMEs, production-relevant resources are often only available in limited numbers and are required for different processes at different locations, so that they regularly change location. This leads to search effort before use. An affordable and customizable solution to locate these resources is needed.

_C.       PROVIDED SOLUTION TO MEET THE NEEDS_

A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) indoor positioning system of the company for the localization of production-relevant resources was tested using the test field of the DIH partner IFW as an example.

Initially, the IFW test field was equipped with gateways for signal acquisition at suitable locations and BLE beacons were attached to selected objects. The location information was presented in a digital layout of the test field via a data interface. The system then reliably displays the location data. The application case illustrates the potential of the solution for industrial production.

RTD Project: BLINKER - Localization and Navigation With a 360°-Camera

_A.       CLIENT PROFILE_

Medium-sized company that develops and produces radio data transmission systems and sensors for guidance of driverless transport vehicles.

_B.       CLIENT NEEDS_

A low-cost solution for navigating driverless transportation systems to let people and robots work together in one environment and to develop systems suited for outdoor navigation, even under rough conditions, such as rain, snow, fog or darkness.

_C.       PROVIDED SOLUTION TO MEET THE NEEDS_

A 360-degree camera with resource-saving onboard processing that constantly monitors the environment while driving. The camera will be used for navigation using artificial and natural landmarks and also for people detection, obstacle avoidance and situation awareness.

RTD Project: Fully-automated Alpha Matting

_A.       CLIENT PROFILE_

Medium-sized system and trading house offering system solutions and individual components in the fields of photo studio technology, medical technology, museum technology, technical television as well as presentation technology and TV & studio technology.

_B.       CLIENT NEEDS_

Automatically generated alpha masks of (humans in) portrait photos in highest quality without time-consuming manual post-processing steps are required.

_C.       PROVIDED SOLUTION TO MEET THE NEEDS_

An integrated camera, lighting, flash and image processing system that fully automates the process of portrait photography from capture to release. The photographer takes a picture of the person(s) against a background and without any further manual intervention, a reusable, detached image of the subject in professional quality is delivered in addition to the captured image. For this purpose, a hybrid algorithmic approach was developed, which is based, among other things, on 3D images.
