BioNanoNet is an Austrian scientific network that specializes in Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) on national and international level, with a strong focus on bio- and nanotechnologies.

BioNanoNet has the clear aim of supporting innovative interdisciplinary research by forming cooperative networks and synergistic collaborations, with special emphasis on nanotoxicology, health, safety & (nano)medicine and sensor technologies.

The BioNanoNet Forschungsgesellschaft mbH is European key player in the field of nanosafety, specialised in developing nano-safety-by-design strategies together with researchers and industry, and coordinates the national technology platforms NanoMedicine-Austria and SusChem-AT.

Additionally, the BioNanoNet GmbH supports national and international research projects in coordination, management, dissemination and communication.

Link to national or regional initiatives for digitising industry

The activities of the hub are well aligned with the Austrian national initiative for digitising industry, Industrie 4.0 Oesterreich and the Digital Roadmap. Furthermore, BioNanoNet supports the initiative European Open Science Cloud.

As part of European Technology Platform Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem) BioNanoNet supports the strategic development (e.g. in the field of process technologies, digital technologies) on European level, as well as on national level by coordinating the Austrian national technology platform SusChem-AT. Both activities are linked to the respective governmental parts, the European Commission on European level; the Austrian ministries on national level, and the provincal government (e.g. Styria) on regional level.

In addition to the sustainable chemistry activities, BioNanoNet also supports the further development of the sensortechnology field in Austria  and Europe (e.g. EU-FP7-project SPIDIMAN; EU-H2020-project R2R Biofluidics). R2R Biofluidics - Large scale micro-and nanofabrication technologies for bioanalytical devices based on R2R imprinting

R2R Biofluidics started on February 1st, 2015. During 4 years it aims for the development of a complete process chain for first-time realization of production lines for two selected bioanalytical lab-on-chip devices based on high throughput R2R nanoimprinting in combination with complementary printing and manufacturing technologies. The consortium, consisting of high qualified experts in the fields of engineering and production technology, chemistry and materials development, and biotechnology and life sciences, will fabricate two types of demonstrators by realising a complete high-volume process chain for industrial fabrication of bioanalytical lab-on-chip devices based on setting–up a roll-to-roll (R2R) production line:

Demonstrator 1: In-vitro diagnostic chip with imprinted microfluidic channels based on chemiluminescence detection using photodetectors; containing imprinted optical nanostructures for light coupling and thus improving device performance.

Demonstrator 2: Cell-chips containing imprinted cavities and micro- to nanoscale channels for controlled neuron culturing to be applied in high throughput drug screening.

These types of demonstrators will target application areas, which will clearly benefit from technology advancement in high volume manufacturing, show large potential for commercial exploitation and adopt current standard formats (microtiter plate and microscope slides).

Thus, R2R Biofluidics is a great example of translational activity by partners in the DIH, supporting digitisation by high throughput screening technologies.

SPIDIMAN (EU-FP7 project) - Single-Port Insulin Infusion for Improved Diabetes Management

Sensortechnology development (regional strength); see focusgroup "sensortechnology" on www.bionanonet.at 

The SPIDIMAN consortium has worked to pave the way for a single-port device that integrates improved glucose measurement and more accurate insulin delivery to provide better glycaemic management for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes. The new device is expected to be particularly suitable for patients in childhood and adolescence, who will form a special focus of the project.

Development of Safety strategies for production processes (safety-by-design implementation)

Project example on national level:

Safe-by-Design - Relevance and added value for Austrian companies

The national project SbD-AT aims to elaborate various aspects on potential implementation of Safe-by-Design concepts in industrial innovation processes, including possible barriers industry faces. In order to support the safe development of nanomaterials, a Safe-by-Design concept was developed in the course of the EU FP7 project NANoREG. This concept focuses on assessment, evaluation and reduction of potential risks for humans and the environment posed by nanomaterials. First insights into its practical applicability were gained from the NANoREG case study “GALANT”. During preparation and execution of this case study, various challenges for the implementation of the Safe-by-Design concept in industrial processes became visible. In order to specify improvement potential and challenges as well as to develop solution options, an active involvement of industry is required. This study addresses these issues and aims at identifying and analyzing perceived advantages and disadvantages, risk awareness and acceptance barriers of the Safe-by-Design concept from an industrial perspective.
