HUB4MANUVAL is a Digital Innovation Hub that will stimulate the uptake of Robotics, CPS/IoT and Artificial Intelligence (AI) by Valencian manufacturing SMEs and MidCaps. The HUB will support manufacturing companies in order to be more competitive, prioritizing SMEs in the manufacturing sectors of relevance at Regional Level, but conecting also with relevant big players, as they can atract others in relevant sectors. The mission of HUB4MANUVAL is to be a reference one-stop shop Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) for manufacturing companies requiring innovation solutions in the field of robotics and ICT, bridging the gap between research and industry.

The Hub will play the role of centralising and facilitating the use of these I4MS technologies to the Valencian manufacturing ecosystem and will provide SME´s and stakeholders with facilities where they will be able to access Robotics, AI and CPS/IoT resources. It will follow a collaborative model by bringing together the main value chain actors and promoting collaborative R&I. The technologies used will be demonstrated to be complementary, showing that industry can be empowered when both are combined.

The hub’s unique combination of partners and stakeholders will effectively allow HUB4MANUVAL to establish itself as an Industry 4.0 one-stop-shop for local manufacturing companies. By providing a gateway to specialist platforms and infrastructures, the DIH will be able to help companies assess their digital needs, find or develop optimal solutions for those needs and secure the necessary funding to implement those digital transformation solutions.  HUB4MANUVAL incorporates partners and stakeholders from university, industry and government (Triple Helix) which will allow it to succeed by using a three-pronged approach where single sided initiatives normally fail. Clients, partners and stakeholders will benefit from access to an extended network of experts and potential partners (Pan-European DIH network), as well as early access to trends and Industry 4.0 activities. 


HUB4.0MANUVAL es un Centro de Innovación Digital (DIH HUB) que estimulará la adopción de la Robótica, Inteligencia Artificial (IA) y los sistemas cíber físicos (CPS/IoT) por parte de las pequeñas y medianas industrias manufactureras valencianas. El HUB apoyará a las empresas manufactureras a fin de ser más competitivas, priorizando las PYMES en los sectores manufactureros de relevancia a nivel regional, pero conectándose también con grandes empresas, en la medida en que  pueden ejercer un efecto tractor sobre otras  en deterimados sectores relevantes. La misión de HUB4.0MANUVAL es ser un centro integral de innovación digital (DIH)de referencia para las empresas de fabricación que requieren soluciones de innovación en el campo de la robótica y las TIC, acortando la brecha entre la investigación y la industria.

El DIH desempeñará el papel de centralizar y facilitar el uso de estas tecnologías de la iniciativa I4MS para el ecosistema manufacturero de la Comunidad Valenciana y proporcionará a las PYME's acceso a instalaciones en las que podrán acceder a los recursos de Robótica, la IA y CPS / IoT. Seguirá un modelo de colaboración reuniendo a los principales actores de la cadena de valor y promoviendo la I+D colaborativa. Se demostrará que las tecnologías utilizadas son complementarias, lo que demuestra que la industria puede ser potenciada cuando ambas se combinan.

La combinación única de socios y agentes interesados del hub permitirá que HUB4.0MANUVAL se configure como una ventanilla única a la nueva Industria 4.0 para las empresas de fabricación locales. Al proporcionar una puerta de entrada a plataformas e infraestructuras especializadas, el DIH podrá ayudar a las empresas a evaluar sus necesidades digitales, encontrar o desarrollar soluciones óptimas para esas necesidades y asegurar los fondos necesarios para implementar esas soluciones de transformación digital. HUB4.0MANUVAL incorpora socios y agentes diversos de la universidad, la industria y el gobierno (triple hélice) lo que le permitirá tener éxito mediante el uso de un enfoque a tres bandas, donde las iniciativas con agentes de un sector únicamente normalmente fracasan. Los clientes, socios y partes interesadas se beneficiarán del acceso a una red ampliada de expertos y socios potenciales (red europea de DIH), así como a un acceso temprano a las tendencias y las actividades de la industria 4.0.


Link to national or regional initiatives for digitising industry

HUB4.0MANUVAL is the result of the feasibility study performed under I4MS initiative, and with the mentoring of HORSE project. This initial study provided a general view of Valencia ecosystem related with industry 4.0 in traditional sectors. A relevant result of the study was also the business plan created to start up the consolidation of the DIH.
The main goal of HUB4.0MANUVAL DIH is contribute to increase and improve the digitization level of manufacturing sectors of Valencian Region with expected results in competitive advantages such as a reduction in production time, increase in accuracy, less human errors, less employees’ costs, increased safety or higher efficiency in manufacturing customised products. Specific methods to deploy Robotics, AI, and CPS/IoT technology solutions will allow companies to reduce their reluctance to the introduction of new technologies and unpredictable times and costs for implementation and maintenance.

During 2018 HUB4.0MANUVAL has been collaborating with Industria Conectada strategy, and RIS3 Comunitat Valenciana (RIS3CV).
In both forums HUB4.0MANUVAL is taking part in technical committees, contributing to the definition of ESDIH model and defining strategic lines and actions for Lab i4.0 of RIS3CV.

Bakery and pastry manipulation is a human task in food industry due to its inherent fragility. To increase productivity and keep costs limited, a robotic manipulation (mainly for picking and placing tasks) was necessary. But commercial grippers are not designed manage soft materials, therefore specific design and development were necessary. DIH provides expertise in design, test and prototyping grippers for different kind of bakery products, suitable for food handling (according with regulations) and ready to be deployed in production lines (TRL7). SME’s have difficulties to access expert knowledge even more when company size is reduced. In many occasions the distance in concepts, goals and approaches to solutions between SME’s and technicians, make the connection complex, due to the differences in the perspective to problems. In these cases, mutual knowledge arises from direct relation exploring solutions with visits and workshops where companies could get in contact directly with innovation, technology and its creators. The UPV has the specialized unit UNOI, which promote the connection and interaction between the Valencian business community and the Valencian R+I+i system of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). Its fundamental function is to facilitate the contact of companies with the University's R+D+i units, thus making possible a greater mutual understanding between the university and business environment. One of the most demanders of UNOI brokerage are the SMEs from FEMEVAL association, regarding innovation in processes with robotics, artificial vision and embedded systems. Usually DIH's competence centers receive annually visitors from companies in FEMEVAL, with the focus on possible technology transfer opportunity.

The Institute of Automation and Industrial Computing-ai2 (competence center of HUB4.0MANUVAL DIH) , have developed a system of localization of the piece to be cut by artificial vision with precision below millimeter. This system is a first step to incorporate cyber physical systems to the machines, which allow to evaluate the quality of the cutting process, and therefore, improve it or even determine maintenance needs in a preventive way.

    Fostering DIHs for Embedding Interoperability in Cyber-Physical Systems of European SMEs
    Fostering DIHs for Embedding Interoperability in Cyber-Physical Systems of European SMEs

    The initiative for Fostering DIHs for Embedding Interoperability in Cyber-Physical Systems of European SMEs (DIH4CPS) will help European enterprises overcome these innovation hurdles and establish Europe as a world leading innovator of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. DIH4CPS will create an embracing, interdisciplinary network of DIHs and solution providers, focussed on cyber-physical and embedded systems, interweaving knowledge and technologies from different domains, and connecting regional clusters with the pan-European expert pool of DIHs. Backed by the IVLab, an experienced and well-established network organisation focussed on Interoperability, DIH4CPS can innately build on an extensive existing network, add value to its existing knowledge transfer capabilities and guarantee the sustainability of the growing DIH network. DIH4CPS expands the already existing network and aims for creating an integrated platform for DIHs from different, especially digitally underdeveloped sectors and regions. A selection of eleven initially starting application experiments guarantees an outstanding funding for European SMEs and Mid-Caps right from the start and demonstrates the high dedication of the consortium to reduce the digital divide. At least ten additional experiments will take up that torch during the project and allow external companies from sectors in need to further exploit the DIH4CPS network and uplift their portfolio, especially by including (semi)-autonomy into their products and systems. DIH4CPS will not only benefit the application experiments but also the individual DIHs by significantly complementing the regional investments made. Implemented in the IVLab structure, the DIH4CPS Network will leverage and sustain its impact far beyond the project duration, creating a vibrant, overarching and cross sector one-stop-shop for collaboration between SMEs, DIHs and Tech providers.

    SMART4ALL builds capacity amongst European stakeholders via the development of selfsustained, cross-border experiments that transfer knowledge and technology between academia and industry. It targets CLEC CPS and the IoT and combines a set of unique characteristics that join together under a common vision different cultures, different policies, different geographical areas and different application domains.  SMART4ALL brings a new paradigm for revealing “hidden innovation treasures” from SEE and helping them to find the path to market via new, innovative commercial products. As part of its strategy, the project will develop and maintain an active network of DIHs across SEE for supporting academics, start-ups, SMEs, and mid-caps entering the digitization era. The mechanisms for achieving this are the design and implementation of 88 cross-border PAEs that will be executed by the consortium members and by 3rd party consortia (academics, companies and mid-caps). The latter will be supported via well-defined regular open calls and will have a day-by-day coaching by SMART4ALL consortium for boosting the research ideas to successful products. PAEs will be actively supported by SMART4ALL DIH cluster throughout and after their execution. The targeted application areas are domains that are not adequately represented in current SAE projects and include digitized environment, digitized agriculture, digitized anything and digitized transport. SMART4ALL introduces also the concept of marketplace-as-a-service (MaaS) that acts as one-stop-smart-stop of SMART4ALL DIH cluster for offering tools, services, platforms based mainly on open sources technologies as well as technology suppliers-adopter matchmaking capabilities customized to the four thematic pillars of the project. Finally, SMART4ALL plans horizontal activities that will support the Digital Skills Agenda of EC and the support of sensitive social groups via ideas and products that have significant impact on their lives.

    One-Stop-Shop Open Access to Photonics Innovation Support for a Digital Europe

    PhotonHub Europe will establish a single pan-EU Photonics Innovation Hub which integrates the best-in-class photonics technologies, facilities, expertise and experience of 53 partners from all over Europe, including the coordinators of EU pilot lines and local photonics hubs representing 18 regions, as a one-stop-shop solution offering a comprehensive range of supports to industry for the accelerated uptake and deployment of photonics. PhotonHub will provide European companies, in particular “non-photonics” SMEs and mid-caps that are first users and early adopters of photonics, with open access and guided orienteering to the following key support services: training and upskilling opportunities within PhotonHub’s Demo and Experience Centres throughout Europe and enhanced by digital tools for online learning; “test before invest” innovation support capabilities to engage with companies on highly collaborative Innovation Projects aimed at TRL acceleration from prototyping (TRL3-4) to upscaling (TRL5-6) to manufacturing (TRL7-8), and complemented by targeted business and IP advisory supports; and support to find investment through investment-readiness coaching and investor match-making organised in collaboration with major regional and European venture fora and deep tech Investor Days. PhotonHub will uniquely support cross-border innovation activities of European companies, while simultaneously working closely with the local photonics hubs to develop and roll out best practices of the “lighthouse” regions for ongoing regional financial support of SME innovation activities and to support the creation of new innovation hubs covering most regions of Europe. Finally, PhotonHub will fine-tune and implement its business plan for long-term sustainability in the form of the PhotonHub Europe Association as a durable entity which is deeply rooted within the wider ecosystem of local, regional and EU-DIHs for maximum leverage and impact on European competitiveness and sovereignty.
