Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding universities in the world, among the top 20 in all the three areas of specialisation: 17th in Engineering (24th in 2016), 9th in Architecture (15th in 2016) and 5th in Design (10th in 2016), according to QS World University Ranking. Founded in 1863, Polimi is the largest school of Architecture, Design and Engineering in Italy, with 3 main campuses located in Milan, heart of fashion and design industries, and 5 campuses based around the Lombardy region, which is one of the most industrialized areas of Europe.

In the academic year 2016/2017, 20% of the students enrolled in Master of Science Programmes were international students.

Inter and multidisciplinary approaches are fostered throughout the academic path, and represent the methodological approach of the PhD School and the ASP (Alta Scuola Politecnica), a school for young talents from all over the world, who develop their skills in a team work context to pursue complex innovation projects.

Teaching is closely related to research, a key commitment that enables to achieve results of high international standards, while creating connections with the business world.

Strategic research is carried out mainly in the fields of energy, transport, planning, management, design, mathematics and natural and applied sciences, ICT, built environment, cultural heritage, with more than 250 laboratories, including a Wind Tunnel (unique in the world for configuration and features), a Crash Test Centre, PoliFAB (the University's infrastructure for micro and nano production) and PoliFactory, a laboratory where new design processes are developed.

Polimi was the first university in Italy for funded projects under the FP7 and also in Horizon 2020 maintains its Italian leadership among other universities (1621 proposals, 207 funded projects for a global amount of more than 94 Million Euros).

 

Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (Polimi Partner - www.fondazionepolitecnico.it/en) was founded in 2003 through a joint effort between the Politecnico di Milano, major city and regional institutions and important corporations to support the university’s research projects and contribute to innovating and developing the economic, productive and administrative environment. Fondazione Politecnico is committed to building a more effective relationship between the university, industry and public administrations.

To achieve these goals, Fondazione Politecnico develops:

  • innovation projects not only for large companies, but for numerous small to medium sized enterprises that characterise the Italian economy;

  • European projects that, by leveraging the Politecnico’s renowned capabilities, extend the network of both university and industrial collaborations outside our borders.

These efforts are complemented by a number of training programmes aimed at upgrading professional skills, to keep workers up-to-date with the rapidly evolving labour market, and of digital and online collaboration initiatives.

Aware of the importance of contributing to economic and social growth, Fondazione Politecnico develops social responsibility projects in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, involving teachers and students in the drive for civil and communal change. In a global context, Fondazione Politecnico has been active in co-operation projects with both countries in need and nations experiencing exponential growth.

 

In 2013 Fondazione Politecnico transformed the Acceleratore di Impresa, Politecnico’s business incubator unit, into a modern structure designed to support the best national and international innovative startups, entrepreneurial empowerment and co-working projects: PoliHub (http://www.polihub.it/), which operates selecting innovative business ideas, forming teams, defining business model and market viability, research, financing and scale-up support. Mentors are managers, entrepreneurs and investors from various innovation sectors providing Acceleration/Startup/Business-Incubation. PoliHub delivers the basic services of an operative DIH: technology transfer, training, incubation and awareness construction capitalizing on the university competences and university consortia (Cefriel, MIP and Poliedra).

PoliHub has been recently awarded third place incubator from the UBI Global ranking (http://ubi-global.com/rankings/) among the top university incubators.

La ricerca strategica viene svolta principalmente nei settori dell'energia, trasporti, pianificazione, management, design, matematica e scienze naturali e applicate, ICT, ambiente costruito, patrimonio culturale, con oltre 250 laboratori tra cui una galleria del vento (unica al mondo per la configurazione e le caratteristiche), un Crash Test Center, PoliFAB (l'infrastruttura dell'Università per la micro e nano fabbricazione) e PoliFactory, un laboratorio in cui vengono sviluppati nuovi processi di progettazione.
Polimi è stata la prima università in Italia per progetti finanziati nell'ambito del 7 ° PQ e anche in Horizon 2020 mantiene la sua leadership italiana tra le altre università (1554 proposte, 206 progetti finanziati per un importo complessivo di oltre 94 milioni di euro).

La Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (partner del Politecnico - www.fondazionepolitecnico.it) nasce nel 2003 per volontà del Politecnico di Milano, delle principali istituzioni di Milano e della Lombardia e di importanti aziende, per sostenere la ricerca dell’Ateneo e per contribuire a innovare e a sviluppare il contesto economico, produttivo e amministrativo. La Fondazione Politecnico opera per rendere più efficace il rapporto tra l’università, le imprese e le pubbliche amministrazioni.

Per raggiungere questi obiettivi sviluppa:

Service Examples

Technology demonstrator and on site testing

The client was a company designing and manufacturing complete turnkey car painting systems with global car manufacturers as main customers (http://geicotaikisha.com/smart-paintshop/ )

In both cases the ‘client’ come to Politecnico with the following needs (one contract in 2015, the other in 2017):

  • Need of a feasibility study and implementation of a digital architecture to gather production data

  • Need of analysis of such data for optimizing programmed maintenance

  • Need of analysis of such data for optimizing energy consumption efficiency.

The Politecnico answer was:

  • The Implementation of a working demonstrator for both cases, currently on operation at the ‘client’ premises

  • Support to solution testing (TRL7)


Cyber Security

The client was a company based in London, UK, which is developing a solution for detecting and preventing internal fraud in banks.

 

They needed a proof-of-concept implementation of a machine-learning based solution to enhance their current approach (which was mostly manual and based on handwritten business rules).

 

Politecnico provided the following support:

- analyzed existing literature and adapted anomaly detection models we already used in similar settings to the problem

- studied client-provided datasets to tailor the solution to the client's needs

- implemented a proof-of-concept system that outperformed the client's handwritten rules on several scenarios


Pilots & Training

The client was a small consulting company and market research center aimed at creating cumulative shared knowledge on technology-based innovation. The main goal of the ‘client’ is to have a tangible impact on the competitiveness of their partners by representing a one-stop-shopping for knowledge and applied research outputs responding to the needs of their business and industry. These knowledge exchanges are channeled through the following services:

•             Seminars and training sessions for IT Executives.

•             On-demand reports on critical topics requiring theoretical frameworks and practical guidelines for decision making.

•             Workshops aimed at gathering IT staff from different companies to enable evangelization and knowledge dissemination on technology-based innovation.

•             Research projects managed on behalf of a partner and executed at the partner’s premises with shared human resources from both the ‘client’ and all involved units of the partner’s organizational structure.

The ‘client’ come to Politecnico with the following needs:

•         Need of an analysis of literature, patents and white papers about technologies for business intelligence on big data (technologies for non-relational data analysis.

•         Need of a synthesis in a document used then for lifelong learning, training and awareness creation.

•         Need of courses delivery to employees

 

The Politecnico answer was:

•         Provision of a service on a pilot on advance analytics topic to support human resources.

•         Training optimization from the employees data analysis.

    Catalysing Digitisation throughout Europe
    Catalysing Digitisation throughout Europe

    The project Smart4Europe responds to ICT-04-2017, Smart Anything Everywhere (SAE) Initiative, scope b), Coordination and Support Actions. In recent years innovation in products and services is to an increasing extent based on digitisation. Prominent examples are consumer products like smart phones, autonomous driving, Industrie 4.0 etc. Digitisation enables enhanced or new functionalities in most products and services. A key question is “How to optimise the transformation of this potential?” Especially SMEs need an easy access to digitisation technologies. Here SAE will help by pooling different offers in a one-stop-shop.
    The concept of Smart4Europe is to serve SAE at three levels:
    • the Commission
    • projects aligned to SAE and
    • all parties interested in SAE, with a focus on SMEs and mid-caps.

    The ultimate goals of Smart4Europe are to provide support in:
    • reinforcing the collaboration between projects supported under SAE
    • increasing their outreach and impact
    • providing wide coverage of stakeholders in technological, application, innovation, and geographic terms.
    In order to achieve this, Smart4Europe will expand an existing website to create an Innovation Portal, provide a service centre; facilitate brokerage; coordinate communication and dissemination activities; help in sharing best practices and experiences; create a Technology Radar to identify technologies SAE can benefit from; and last but not least, establish links to regional/national initiatives to leverage investments and stimulate growth.
    Smart4Europe is driven by a strong consortium of partners that have already demonstrated their commitment and engaged for several years in shaping the SAE Initiative. Under the SAE umbrella there will be a growing number of projects, focusing on different technology domains and positions in the innovation cycle – Smart4Europe will include all of them, bringing together the community, helping it to grow organically and catalysing digitisation throughout Europe.
