Description

Across Europe (and even outside), regions are at different stages in the quest for smart specialisation, from understanding what it means and setting a vision for the future, to establishing priorities through an entrepreneurial process of discovery, and finally to begin implementing their strategies. In reality it is not a linear process and in fact constant reflection is the cornerstone of any succesful strategy. However, what remains the same at all stages is the importance of a good governance structure.

The regions of Europe are also entering a critical period in terms of spending the new European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) in the area of Research and Innovation because Operational Programmes are being launched.

In this context, the S3 Platform hold a thematic workshop on governance, hosted by the Centru region of Romania, on 27-28 May. Three regions, including Lombardy (Italy), Värmland (Sweden) and Centru itself shared experiences on governing their smart specialisation strategies and moving from design to implementation. The peer review discussions were preceded by the roundtable discussion on the main issue.
