The S3 Platform has been recognised as "best practice" by the highly competitive and renowned European Public Sector Awards (EPSA), under the theme "An Innovative Public Sector in 2017: New solutions to complex challenges". The S3 Platform was selected among 150 applications received from local, regional and national, and Europe-wide projects of public sector organisations.

The Smart Specialisation Platform helps regional and national authorities to prioritise their efforts to create an innovative economy. Established by the European Commission in 2011, it facilitates mutual learning, data gathering, analysis, and networking opportunities for more than 170 EU regions and 18 national governments. The Platform has been instrumental in consolidating, disseminating and implementing the smart specialisation methodology across European regions. It has helped to optimise the definition of innovation strategies on the basis of regional strengths and through an open and participatory process. This recognition as 'best practice' is an important endorsement of our work to improve EU investments for knowledge based territorial development.

EPSA is the only Europe-wide public sector award covering all levels and types of administration across Europe. Managed by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), EPSA has recognised over 1,000 cases of excellence with inspirational and practical solutions that could be replicated by other countries in a new context and in new forms.

The EPSA 2017 awards has been presented in Maastricht (the Netherlands) on 20 to 22 November, on the occasion of a high-level event, where the S3 Platform has contributed with a presentation.
