The JRC SDGs Team contributes to shape STI for SDGs global events

The JRC SDGs Team has contributed to a number of events on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Those debates are supporting the global community in setting the scene and defining priorities on the topic.

The JRC SDGs Team has contributed to a number of events on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Those debates are supporting the global community in setting the scene and defining priorities on the topic.  

Some milestone events are outline below:

Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs in preparation for the 5th STI Forum 2020

3-5 February 2020, jointly organised by the United Nations’ divisions: DESA, UNCTAD, UNOSD, OOSA, and UNIDO.

The JRC experts were among over 50 SDGs experts invited in  representation of academia, NGOs, national parliaments and ministries, privet sector and the UN system, who met in Vienna to discuss the shape, structure, and topics of the STI forum.

The 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report and especially six entry points: human well-being, sustainable economies, food system, energy, urban development and global commons and four levers: governance, economy and finance, action, science and technology, served as a base to structured 11 sessions of the meeting.

The participants discuss mainly the following issues:

  • what are the achievements and particular solutions in the area of science technology and innovation for SDGs

  • emerging issues

  • innovation divine and critical knowledge, and how to tackle this problem

  • role of governments and global policies

  • lessons learnt from the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM)

Capacity Building Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals

      9-17 December 2019 in Guilin, Guangxi Province, in China, organized by UN DESA, MOST China and UNESCAP.

The training was a follow up to the Global Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals, which is part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM), mandated by the 2030 Agenda and focused on three main areas:

       1) creating an enabling environment for STI for the SDGs;

       2) platforms and mechanisms for STI collaboration; and

       3) emerging STI concepts, opportunities and challenges.

The 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report, including six entry points, provided a framework and substance for many of the debates. During twenty designed sessions participants discussed, among others, the following issues:

  • STI Roadmaps as policy and planning tools leading to action on STI in support of SDG

  • How to improve the innovation capacities of a range of stakeholders

  • Exploring innovative approaches to leverage human and financial resources for STI

  • identify practical means and solutions to foster STI.
