Description

Cardiff University hosted the first workshop on Smart Specialisation in the UK in partnership with the S3 Platform.

Attended by a range of stakeholders from the scientific and business sectors in the UK, the workshop aimed to:

• raise awareness of Smart Specialisation;
• highlight what support is available to the nations and regions of the UK as they prepare their strategies; and
• explore and compare the diverse approaches being adopted in different parts of the UK.

The focus was on strengthening the development of Smart Specialisation Strategies across the UK and helping practitioners to think more creatively about their approach and process.
Speakers provided a mix of policy perspectives and practical experience. They included representatives from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), European Commission (DG Regio and the IPTS), the Scottish and Northern Ireland devolved administrations and an English Local Authority (Kent).
