Smart Specialisation in Energy, how Europe's regions are implementing their priorities

Energy is indeed the most popular priority selected in smart specialisation strategies across Europe, with over 2/3 of all EU regions choosing at least one energy-related priority. From the perspective of Cohesion Policy, effective uptake of funds related to innovation in energy will be a crucial element of this pillar, as well as the actual implementation of the smart specialisation strategies. In this context, the existence of these national or regional smart specialisation strategy, which complies with the features of well-performing national or regional R&I systems, are indeed a prerequisite for the effective and efficient achievement of a specific objective for all investment priorities under thematic objective 1 (TO1): Strengthening research, technological development and innovation.
