During this workshop, which was co-organised by the S3 Platform and the Federal State of Brandenburg, the following five regions presented their current work on RIS3 (Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation): Berlin-Brandenburg (DE), Greater Manchester (UK), Mazovia (PL) and Prague (CZ).

Building on the experience gained during the previous peer-review workshops organised by the S3 Platform, peer review was used as an instrument to support EU regions and Member States in the development of their RIS3 - the S3 peer review methodology.

A panel session                                                                                                                    
A panel of experts discussed how to link the innovation potentials of metropolis and their peripheries. They covered the following topics:

  • Strategies for territorial cohesion between metropolis & periphery in selected European countries
  • Using ICT to link metropolis & peripheries
  • Promoting diffusion processes from metropolis to regional surroundings
  • Smart internationalisation for city-regions

Invited Experts
Anne-Mari Leppinen
gave ICT-related insights for the workshop discussions. 2007-2012 she was responsible for the sales and marketing in Suupohjan Seutuverkko Oy which is a municipality-owned open access FTTH-network (fiber-to-the-home) in Western Finland. Besides marketing aspects she has also been involved in different EU- and national projects trying to promote the growth of open access FTTH-networks in Finland as well as in Europe. Currently, she is an ICT project manager in the Economic Development Agency of Suupohja Region. Her tasks include the development of different ways to use FTTH. Presentation

Maciej Smętkowski holds a Ph.D. in earth sciences focusing on economic geography. He is Assistant Professor at the Centre for European Regional and Local Studies (EUROREG), Warsaw University, and Deputy Director of the Institute of America and Europe, University of Warsaw, as well as Board Member of the Polish Section of the Regional Studies Association. His participation provided information about the roles of metropolis for the development of regions. Presentation

Professor Jörg Knieling contributed to the event by explaining different strategies of territorial cohesion between metropolis and periphery in selected European countries. He holds the Chair of Urban Planning and Regional Development at the HafenCity University Hamburg. His research interests cover sustainable urban and regional planning and development, metropolitan, urban and regional governance as well as planning cultures. By addressing the main challenges facing urban and regional development - such as sustainable development, climate change, competitiveness, cohesion, integration and demographic change - his work gives priority to research, interdisciplinary studies and innovative solutions. Professor John Shutt runs an international regional and urban research consultancy which is based in Northumberland, United Kingdom. John is Emeritus Professor of Employment and Regional Development at Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University and a Visiting Professor at CURDS, Newcastle University. John has extensive UK, European and international expertise in urban and regional economic development policy and is currently researching the New Localism and LEPs in England and European regional development for 2020. He shared his experience regarding city-regions and their internationalisation efforts. Presentation

During this workshop, which was co-organised by the S3 Platform and the Federal State of Brandenburg, the following five regions presented their current work on RIS3 (Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation): Berlin-Brandenburg (DE), Greater Manchester (UK), Mazovia (PL) and Prague (CZ).

The other workshop participants acted as 'critical friends' and discussed the strategies of the five regions under review. All five regions had a number of shared challenges in their RIS3 and these were discussed widely during the peer review.
