Lagging Regions - Workshop: "RIS3 in Greece: Consolidating Governance and Raising Ambition"

General Information

The JRC, in collaboration with our central government partner, the Ministry of National Economy and Development under the framework of the project "RIS3 Support to Lagging Regions" organised a workshop in Thessaloniki on 13 February 2019. The workshop "RIS3 in Greece: Consolidating Governance and Raising Ambition" had two aims:

•              To contribute to the improvement of RIS3 governance. A practical step in this direction was the participatory exercise on governance with representatives from all 13 regions (including the Managing Authority, the Region and a representative of the regional innovation council) and central government policy makers (including the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and relevant units of the Ministry of National Economy and Development). Under the guidance of the JRC, participants jointly mapped the governance functions within each region and their position within the multi-level governance of S3. The exercise served to raise awareness of the required functions for the good governance of RIS3, of outstanding bottlenecks and can lead to the identification of governance configuration scenarios, tailored to the needs and constraints of each region. A report on this exercise has been prepared by Mr Michalis Metaxas and can be downloaded here.
•              To raise the ambition of RIS3 in Greece in preparation for the next programming period. To this end, invited experts presented examples of integrated projects aiming to transform production and consumption systems. These included projects in the circular economy, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing, which also represent themes of growing European and global interest. A common feature of these projects was the combination of research and innovation interventions with synergetic actions in other policy areas, including urban planning and large-scale infrastructures.
