The JRC and Regione Puglia have been collaborating on a set of activities, as part of the JRC project of “Targeted Support for RIS3 Implementation” since 2016. A set of further activities are now planned, centred on the role of universities and higher education in RIS3 implementation. The activities have two main aims: a) To promote the integration of higher education, research, innovation and regional development in S3 policy mixes, particularly in the use of European Structural and Investment (ESI) Funds. b) To help build innovation capabilities by looking at the role of HEIs in regional partnerships Regione Puglia, ARTI Puglia and the JRC have co-identified two topics to be studied and addressed: a) The role of Istituti Tecnici Superiori (Higher Technical Institutes, or ITS) in S3. b) The role of doctoral training in S3

Interreg project Baltic TRAM partnership is organising a Mid-Term Conference dedicated to tighter collaboration between industry / SMEs and the research sector.
This event concludes a set of three meetings in which the partner regions of the project RIS3 Support in Lagging Regions have discussed and advanced their monitoring system.
A roundtable on Smart Specialisation and Local Development organised by the JRC (Lagging Regions Project) as part of the 2017 International Conference on Local Development, hosted by the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal (25-7 May 2017).
The second meeting of the working-group on RIS3 monitoring in lagging regions brought forward the discussion started in February. It looked into some technical aspects of monitoring (such as for instance, data collection methods and target setting), as well as providing avenues for sharing good practices among regions.

A meeting on "Strengthening technology transfer capabilities in S3 priority areas in Romania under ROP Priority Axis 1 'Support for technology transfer" was held in Bucharest, on 31 March 2017 at the Ministry of Regional Development, Public Administration and European Funds, in the context of JRC's "RIS3 support in Lagging Regions" (LAGREG) project, which covers, among others, the North-East and North-West regions of Romania.
On 21 February 2017, the North-West region of Romania will organize, with JRC participation, an EDP Focus Group on ICT, which is one of the region's RIS3 priority fields, as well as a sector with recognised potential, nationally and abroad. The event gathers a broad range of local stakehoders, who will analyse current trends in the ICT sector, ways to accelerate the transition from outsourcing to proprietary products, and niche sectors for further development of the sector. The participants will also focus on opportunities for the development of new, innovative products and technology transfer, supported by ERDF funds.
The first meeting of the JRC Lagging Regions Working Group on Monitoring will be held in Barcelona (at the EC Representation) on the 16th of February. During this meeting, representatives from the project's partner regions will examine their approaches to RIS3 monitoring with the support of independent experts. The outcomes of the event will provide the basis for some online learning material.
