Given its experimentalist and result-oriented approach, Smart Specialisation places a strong emphasis on the role of monitoring and evaluation.
This event concludes a set of three meetings in which the partner regions of the project RIS3 Support in Lagging Regions have discussed and advanced their monitoring system.
The second meeting of the working-group on RIS3 monitoring in lagging regions brought forward the discussion started in February. It looked into some technical aspects of monitoring (such as for instance, data collection methods and target setting), as well as providing avenues for sharing good practices among regions.
A final event successfully took place in Brussels on 18 November 2015 at the Museum of Natural Sciences.
Based on the outcomes of the four Entrepreneurial Discovery Process focus groups (on wine, dairy and meat, tourism and marble/non-metallic minerals) and of the first Project Development Lab (PDL), selected ideas were further developed towards implementation in a second PDL. This took place on the 24th of June at the Hotel Astir Egnatia in Alexandropoulis. Many of the promising ideas generated during the Entrepreneurial Discovery Process (EDP) focus groups were further pursued in line with possible funding sources in the first Project Development Lab (PDL). This workshop event took place in Komotini on 6-7 May 2015.

The workshop on the value chain of non-metallic minerals was based on the same approach that was followed for organising three similar events in the past (wine, dairy/meat products, tourism). The event gave the opportunity to the participants (representing all strands of the triple helix) to be exposed on key innovations in the value chain of the selected sectors at the national and European level and at the same time to stimulate idea generation for business development.
Together with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (REMTh), JRC-IPTS is currently carrying out a European Parliament Preparatory Action. This project has two main aims: to provide "hands-on" support to the implementation of the RIS3 in REMTh, a region heavily hit by the crisis, and to generate lessons for other convergence regions in Greece and Europe.
The Third Entrepreneurial Discovery Process Focus Group on tourism took place in Alexandroupolis (Greece).
The Second Entrepreneurial Discovery Process Focus Group on dairy and meat products took place in Komotini (Greece).
