THEMATIC WORKSHOP: "Economic Indicators and Monitoring and Evaluation Tools for Smart Specialisation Strategies (RIS3)24/01/2013 25/01/2013
The event was co-organised by the European Commission, the University of Groningen and the region Northern Netherlands (NL). The workshop focused on the use of economic indicators and monitoring and evaluation tools in the context of research and innovation strategies for smart specialisation (RIS3). The purpose of the initiative was to discuss the role of different types of indicators in the process of developing and implementing RIS3 in general and with the support of the Structural Funds.
Building on the experience gained from the previous four peer-review workshops organised by the IPTS (EC), this workshop employed the peer-review methodology as an instrument to support EU regions and Member States in the development of their RIS3 (research and innovation strategies for smart specialisation).
More than eighty participants from the different countries and regions of the Atlantic Arc gathered in Bordeaux to discuss how they can implement smart specialisation in their regions and cooperate across borders. Inspiration was taken from the Baltic Sea, which is more advanced in terms of its macro-regional strategy.
JRC-IPTS together with DG REGIO, DG ENTR, EURADA and UEAPME hosted an event on SMEs and Smart Specialisation. The event informed on and discussed possibilities for SME involvement in smart specialisation strategy development (RIS3) and their implementation.
The ICTIMED event featured Prof. Foray as the keynote speaker. His presentation emphasised, appropriately, the need to avoid emphasising sectors and thinking in sectoral terms when addressing smart specialisation.
The INTERREG IVC project KNOW-MAN is dedicated to knowledge network management in technology parks.

WORKSHOP "PEER DISCUSSION AS A STEP TOWARDS RIS3"
The Italian country event on RIS3 was hosted by the Apulia Region in Bari and gathered representatives from all Italian regions, the Ministry for Economic Development and the Ministry for Research, University and Education. Two EU regions were invited to illustrate their experience on smart specialisation strategies: Upper Austria and Castilla y León.
