The Polish Ministry of Economy and the World Bank Group in coordination with the European Commission organised a joint regional workshop entitled "Smart Investment for Smart Specialisation". The goal of the event was to support Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Poland in realizing smart specialisation strategies, and as such achieving more efficient investment of structural funds from the European Union.

The Meeting of the IQ-Net Network
On the eve of the conference, Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, and President of the RegioStars Jury, and Luc van den Brande, former President of the Committee of the Regions, announced the winners of the RegioStars 2012 Awards. Styria in Austria, Malmö in Sweden, Podlaskie in Poland and two European Territorial Cooperation projects, bringing together partners from 9 different Member States, are the clear winners taking centre stage in Europe.
The S3 Platform held a third peer-review workshop hosted by the Azorian government. Azores held the presidency of the grouping of EU Outermost Regions until October 2012 and the workshop had a focus on peripherality as a factor in smart specialisation strategies.
The WIRE 2012 conference was planned as a flagship discussion forum centred on formulation of a process of smart and sustainable development based on knowledge and innovation with particular attention to regional dimension.
S3 Seminar for the Danube Macro Region
The aim of this event that gathered about 100 participants from all over the Danube region was to inform about Smart Specialisation Strategies, and discuss macro-regional strengths, comparative advantages and potential future growth areas.
This smart specialisation seminar was organised in Brno for participants from both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The seminar was aimed at discussing the conditions for the fulfilment of the ex-ante conditionality "innovation strategy for smart specialisation" foreseen within the proposal of SF regulations for the programming period 2014-2020.
