AREA Science Park is a system based on innovation, digital transformation, research and the development of new high technology businesses.
AREA Science Park owns and manages two campuses in Friuli Venezia Giulia, both near Trieste http://en.areasciencepark.it/park/why-to-become-a-tenant/ hosting more than 80 companies http://en.areasciencepark.it/park/companies/ and research centers http://en.areasciencepark.it/park/research-centres/ with a total of 2400 employees.

From the beginning of 2017 AREA Science Park is operating as a DIH, adding new specific services to its set of established best practice methodologies to support innovation processes in SMEs www.areasciencepark.it/innovazione/. This has been realized thanks to the partnership with primary tech actors that are tenants in our campuses and thanks to a vast set of top end/frontier tech infrastructures (ex: AREA owns and run a Synchrotron light machine).

The R&D activities carried out in AREA Science Park focus on five clusters: Life Sciences; Information Science, Electronics and Telecommunications; Physics, Materials, Nanotechnologies; Energy and the Environment; Qualified Services.
Non profit Organization status
Area Science Park is a public national research organization that promotes the development of innovation processes. Thus, AREA Science Park is a non profit public body that operates under direct control of the MIUR - Ministry of Education, Research and University.
AREA’s mission is to contribute to the development of the business sector through innovation, technological research and digital transformation.

In mid-2017 AREA Science Park started to develop the first regional platform for the digital transformation of SMEs . IP4FVG – Industry Platform for FVG has been officially supported and financed by the Regional Government of the Authonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, MIUR -Italian Ministry for University and Research and from MISE - Italian Ministry for Economic Development that is the coordinator of the national plan for the digital transformation of SMEs “Impresa 4.0”. The final official Protocol has been signed by the aforementioned parties on the 1st March 2018 https://www.areasciencepark.it/innovazione/sistema-argo-2/, and AREA Science Park is the coordinator of IP4FVG.

IP4FVG is based on a Hub & Spoke model and is formed by 4 territorial NODES – DIHs, each with a specific technological specialization:

IP4FVG is directly linked with the national plan “Impresa 4.0” not just for being supported by the its coordinator MISE – Ministry for Economic Development but also through a direct linkage with the newly established national network of Competence Centers created within Impresa 4.0. The Governence body of IP4FVG seats a representative of the CC named SMACT, lead by the University of Padua www.unipd.it/smact-competence-center. Further, AREA Science Park participates directly to the CC with its in house company Innovation Factory www.if.areasciencepark.it
Area Science Park as one of the main stakeholders in the field of Innovation, Tech Transfer, R&D, Digital Transformation is a close partner to the Regional Government in policy matters. From the very beginning Area advised the Regional Government in the design phase of the S3 (enterpreneurial discovery) and in the revision process of the regional S3. Area Participates to all the specific regional working groups set up for every specialization sector. Further, The Institutional Protocol and regulatory framework that constitute the basis of the IP4FVG Platform, state that all the activities developed must comply and be coherent with the regional S3 strategy (pa4 of the Protocol)https://www.areasciencepark.it/wp-content/uploads/Protocollo-Intesa-MIUR-MISE-Regione-FVG.pdf .

For all these reasons, Colombin is the sector leader in Italy in production and sales of corks, and is active in 34 other countries across the globe.
b. Client needs:
In 2016 the company was looking for new selection technologies to set up an automatic classification system of corks .
The selection and classification of the various types of corks (and their relative quality classes) goes through a selection process based on machines that could be enhanced.
The idea of the company was to integrate new digital systems suitable for quality control and on-line classification of defects.

b. Client needs:
In 2017 Area Science Park was contacted by a multinational company, with the aim of developing an innovative approach to extend the benefits of their digital transformation processes to the local supplier base and to test the digitalization solutions implemented in their plants for other application areas and for SMEs. Teorema Engineering is a technological partner of Area Science Park DiH and was interested in developing new industrial use cases for their Industry 4.0 technological solutions and in further strengthening their expertise in customizable “open” solutions for integration of different technologies and processes.
c. Provided solution to meet the needs
Area Science Park after reviewing with both companies their complementary needs and expertise set up a cooperation program which resulted in a common project involving all three entities in shared co-creation of new technological solutions and novel methodological approaches for Open Access use of the new technologies for SMES.
Area Science Park worked with both companies to set up a project aimed at testing the solutions already available and at developing novel technological solutions to enhance predictive maintenance and advanced process control.

In 2017 CAEN ELS wanted to implement a project of process and organization innovation focused on digital technologies to be able to service clients located on various continents (testing and after-sales).
The objective of the project is the innovation of product testing and maintenance processes through the adoption of digital technologies.
