The IR Hub is a Smart Industry Fieldlab program involving ten partners active in industrial applied AR/VR, including eight companies with technological expertise in AR/VR , the VR Lab of University of Twente and Regional Development agency Oost NL.

Mission

 “Our mission is to enhance the collaboration between human and machine through seamless integration of Data and AR/VR technology, enabling humans to remain the leading factor in the digital society. Moreover, our ambition is to make digital reality accessible, affordable, practically usable and socially relevant for any industrial organisation”.

We focus on the societal challenge of the innovative and inclusive society.

This Digital Hub is build on the roots of Virtual Reality Valley europe,  created 1999. The Hub has received a boost in 2015 with a new focus on accelerating innovation through sharing knowledge and cooperation , specifically AR and VR (XR), and the broader subject of Human Machine Interfaces, AI, Sensors and Big Data. The Hub members distinguis themselves by being a top performers with a focus on digitization of international manufacturing companies and act globally in multiple international supply chain. Key themes are application of AR and VR in guided operations, guided maintenance, VR training and digital twins together with machine learning, AI, Big Data and sensors


The 4th Industrial Revolution deals with far-reaching flexibility, robotization and automation. Many companies share the vision: "24 hours a day full automated and error-free production, based on customer questions." But that also raises many questions about the impact on employment. Do you as a company focus on technology or human beings? Due to more flexibility in production, coupled with shorter turnaround times and the desire for error-free production, companies are opposed to the limited information processing capacity of humans. The IR Hub therefore focuses on the development of technological solutions for improving the interaction between human and machine.

Activities

The companies that collaborate within the IR Hub are active in three working groups

  1. Knowledge - development of technology roadmaps
  2. Projects - Development of international cooperation and innovation projects
  3. Internationalisation and Exposure – connecting the Hub on the European level to partners and other Hubs.

Doel van de IR Hub is het intensiveren van de onderlinge verbindingen tussen de bedrijven die actief zijn of willen zijn op de kennisvelden die samen Industrial AR/VR vormen en uit te groeien tot een Europese speler.

Dit willen we bereiken door samenwerking te entameren tussen een cluster van technologie- en kennisleiders en een innoverend MKB-netwerk die samen hun concurrentievermogen vergroten en bijdragen aan maatschappelijke uitdagingen.

We richten ons op de maatschappelijke uitdaging van de innovatieve and inclusieve samenleving. 

De 4e Industriële Revolutie gaat over verregaande flexibiliteit, robotisering en automatisering. Veel bedrijven delen de visie: "24 uur per dag volledige geautomatiseerde en foutloze productie, gebaseerd op klantenvragen." Maar dat brengt ook veel vragen over de impact op de werkgelegenheid op. Bent u als bedrijf gericht op technologie of mensen? Door meer flexibiliteit in productie, in combinatie met kortere omlooptijden en het verlangen naar foutloze productie, zijn bedrijven tegen de beperkte informatieverwerkingskracht van de mens. De IR Hub richt zich daarom op de ontwikkeling van technologische oplossingen om de interactie tussen mens en machine te verbeteren.

 

De IR Hub activteiten zijn georganiseerd in drie werkgroepen:

  1. Kennis - Het ontwikkelen van een kennis/technologieroadmap, waarvoor de eerste aanzet gemaakt is.
  2. Projecten - Het bouwen van complexe regionale en Europese projecten, die duidelijk terug te herleiden zijn als zijnde als resultaat van en voor de Hub
  3. Internationlisering en Exposure – Zorgdragen voor effectieve communicatie van de propositie van de Hub bij de doelgroepen: partners, klanten en beleidsmakers, het connecten met andere Hubs.

We are firmly linked to the to the regional Smart Industry platform as Fieldlab. the cluster is supported by the regional innovation agenda in East Netherlands. Projects in de the cluster where funded with EFRO, MIT, Manunet and Interreg Digitization project Digipro and Ipro.

National

the Hub coordinaot is the East Netherlands Development Agence which is driver of the HTSM Topsector (RIS3 strategy see www.op-oost.eu), of which industrial AR/VR is part of. We cooperate with the regions of Brabant (BOM), and South-Holland (IQ) and have produced market scans together. Guided Maintenance

a. Client profile

Industrial manufacturers, environments of operational excellence

b. Client needs

Manufacturers are short on qualified maintenance personel and also want to keep their maintenance cost low by avoiding travel expenses. Every new model has new specifications which can become difficult for personnel to train. 

c. Provided solution

An Augmented Reality  (AR) software platform was developed by Recreate for AR Guided Maintence using the Microsoft Hololens, iPad and iPhones. This service is used for maintaining the brake mechanism of audi cars, for power inspection and logistic handling, pick and place. The service ensures a high level of standardisation across different maintenance locations and reduces handling time while improving quality.

Digital Twins for High Tech Systems

Manufacturers of High Tech systems have to manage their product life cycles across different value chains of different customers and exchange electronic data during the stages of product development, production and maintenance. The challenge for Thales Netherlands  as manufacturer of Radars and Software systems is to train and maintain and have the up to date and reliable information at the right moment. 

c. provided solution

The development and usage of 3D Digital Twins (model based engineering) during product development, to create immersive experiences for different stakeholders in the development process, such as naval architects, end-users and high tech systems developers. Whole new to be build Navy ships are accessible in a 3D environment, using Virtual Reality.

Training in Virtual Reality

Apollo Vredesteijn is a manufacturer of car tires and uses machines to produce car tires

b. client needs

In the process of tires manufacturing, high quality and precision is required while at the same time keeping personnel safe. This is a challenge due to the complexity of the work and different circumstances in low cost countries, where the personnel is less well trained.

c. provided solution

A Virtual Reality training set was developed by SeriousVR for Apollo for operating Tire manufacturing machines. This training software enables to keep training costs low while standardising training and enabling personal a safe training before getting to the real work.
