Description

In October 2015, as part of the Open Days programme, the S3 Platform together with the government of the Canary Islands, organised a workshop on the implementation of Smart Specialisation in the area of 'Blue Growth'. Participants included regions that have chosen maritime priorities in their Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3). Four S3P members presented their plans for specialising in Blue Growth: The Canary Islands (ES), Nordland (NO), Portugal and Ireland. It was a highly participative workshop that also included a technical visit to the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands and the port of Las Palmas.

The specific objectives were to:

  1. Understand how blue growth has been prioritized and framed in RIS3;
  2. Discuss blue growth solutions proposed by industry, researchers and other stakeholders;
  3. Examine possible blue growth policy mixes including the use of European funds;
  4. Explore possibilities for transnational cooperation projects.

The workshop resulted in a JRC Policy Brief on Blue Growth and Smart Specialisation: How to catch maritime growth thrBlue Growth and Smart Specialisation: How to catch maritime growth through 'Value Nets'ough 'Value Nets'.
