The purpose of this meeting was to exchange on Smart Specialisation, building on European and international experiences, and to envisage to what extent it could feed into Peru's research and innovation policies.

The meeting confirmed the strong interest of Peruvian delegates in Smart Specialisation. It has represented an opportunity for JRC to explain the key principles and the rationale at the heart of Smart Specialisation and to give insights not only about the European experience, but also about Smart Specialisation worldwide activities (including in Peru), in particular the lessons from the workshop "Smart Specialisation from the EU to the world" in September 2018. Representatives from Peru informed about the driving role of the Secretariat of Decentralisation for the articulation between the national and the regional level in Peru and the launching of five regional pilot projects. The regional government of La Libertad expressed a strong ambition towards innovation in general and Smart Specialisation in particular.

JRC and Peru agreed to keep the contact regarding next steps towards Smart Specialisation in Peru.
